I don't know about Tess, but Winchester Cathedral, like Mary Rose, is supposed to be hardy to about -10 to -20 F, while I've seen Gertrude listed as surviving down to -27 F. I think that was on Rogers Roses.

Good to know about Madame Plantier. What albas are you growing that aren't doing well?

I'm trying snow pavement roses with hidcote lavender this year. Madame Plantier might be another white rose that will do well here :)

Tess will make long shoots that you may want to peg down to increase the fall bloom. I don't think you'll have enough cane survival to be able to prune her into a bushy shrub. A late basal from last fall was winter-damaged at about 9 degrees (but it was quite soft). She's a lovely rose, though.

Mike, we don't get ANY fall bloom. Oh, that would be nice. The rose season begins here with Rosa xanthina. Then, Harison's Yellow and Therese Bugnet.
After that, the main rose flush, albas, centifolias and damask. The War of the Roses seems to occur about the Fourth of July.
In July, Dr. Van Fleet and American Pillar bloom a little on whatever growth made it through the winter.
Zephirine Drouhin starts to bloom then, too, and was going to bloom in September, but the buds froze.
Quatre Saison loses its canes down to a foot but re-grows quickly and blooms all summer. This got me thinking that maybe I could find some repeat bloomers that would re-grow and bloom on new wood, extending the rose season out to the end of the summer.
So far, red roses are not in the future, it seems like. Gruss an Teplitz and Alfred Colomb are toast this spring, but alive, I think. My science experiments with Bourbons and hybrid perpetuals are mixed. They seem to need balmy ocean breezes or shade. I need to get around to doing some winter protection.
Lavender Lass, all of my albas are doing well. Chloris, Alba maxima, Alba semi-plena, and Konigen von Danemark all get about five feet here. Madame Plantier is about as tall but wide. It throws out long, loopy canes that dangle
on the ground. It should have been planted in an obelisk or something.

Deb / Otis, I don't know how long you've had Mme Plantier, but if you allow the old dead stems to accumulate, they build up into a biscuit that supports the plant somewhat from underneath. Also, when I realized how floppy she was, I gave mine a hoop of fence wire to grow up through.I don't recall removing it, so maybe it's still buried in there somewhere. Olga says she prunes hers to stand up, though.

That might work, you know. I've got a roll of fence wire laying around. Lately, I've been staring at it with one of those adult beverages and thinking 'truck tire?'
How many roses are you growing these days? You should post us a picture sometime. I can never get photobucket to do anything I want. It seems to hate Macs.

Of the three, Winch Cath is probably the hardiest, but even here in zone 5b some years I need to prune it back to less than 6" after winterkill. People are always tossing about that G Jeckyl is one of the hardiest DAs but it's not. More winterkill than W.C., will probably die back to the ground every year for you. I have two and so far neither one has progressed to a large bush. W.C. grows 3-4' tall and wide for me. I don't grow Tess.

After a number of years in the ground, Gertrude Jekyll has grown taller for me. It reaches about 5 1/2 feet tall now, very little dieback.

James Galway has been a superb rose for me, my tallest Austin; it's 6 feet tall, forms an arching shrub.

I grow Tess in my Zone 5 garden (near Toronto). We get -20 degree Celsius winters and lots of snow cover (usually). I've only had her for 2 winters now. I actually moved her last Spring (due to a color clash - she's a little more pink, and less true red than I thought she'd be - but a beautiful rose) so she hasn't gotten too big yet, but this rose does appear to be hardy in my garden with minimal protection. I just mounded a bit of cedar mulch around the base both winters. She came through last winter just fine - I had to trim off about half of each cane due to winter dieback, but it wasn't too bad - didn't die back all the way to the ground at any rate. This past winter, she has survived as well although it is a bit too early here to see details.

She does tend to grow upwards with long shoots although I'm sure you could prune her into a shrub, I'm trying to grow her as a small climber so ... we'll see how that goes :) Even having planted and then moved her both Springs that I've had her, I still got a small early summer flush, and then a minimal fall display as well. I'm looking forward to getting her truly established!

Sounds like I figured right. I could get these three into a smaller spot than usual, and get some roses in July and August.
