Name That Plant!

I was wondering if you could ID a fern for me without a picture? I believe it is native, very small (about 2-3 inches tall) and looks similar in leaf shape to lady fern (I think). It has gone dormant for the year so I can't get a picture, and I haven't been able to find out what it is.

Ferns are tough to ID, especially without a picture and just going by memory.

I’m trying to find the id of this fern; when I put in ruffled edge fern in google, I get Nephrolepis exaltata 'Fluffy Ruffles'. But my fern definitely does not look like fluffy ruffles, because the ruffles are only on the edge tips of the individual leaves, and not the whole leaf. I thought maybe its just sport. Has anyone seen this before?

are those in a "wood" of a garden or in actual woodland, not planted? no 2,: does it feel soft? gardners/ botanists gut feeling perhaps Athyrium filix-femina no3: perhaps a Polystichum because it looks shiny, should feel somewhat harder
