My HFGH and Seed Starting Rack

Here is a Link to Photos of my HFGH I have the 6X8. Hooked it to my 9X11 Potting Shed. Put on top of 12" Raised Beds so I can have more head room, also meets up nicely with the Shed.

Put in Brick Paver floor with 8" of pea gravel under. I used Pressure treated for the raised bed with 1" Cedar around the top to prevent reaction with Aluminum. Lined Raised beds with Plastic to prevent leaching of copper into soil, Plastic is open at bottom to allow proper drainage. I also added a Rain Berrel on the back and catch rain water for watering have a hose run right inside.

The 4 tier Seed starter was built for around $200 with parts from Lowes and Home Depot and will support 16 flats nicely.

Very nice, Keith, well done! ... but there's no spot in your greenhouse for a chair. Very nice job on the seed starting rack, too.

Excellent idea to raise the water barrel like that. A rain barrel is on my list for this spring, as soon as I find one that has the spigot on the bottom like that (instead of in the middle). What will/do you do with the rain barrel during the winter?

Even though everything I have read told me that the seeds don't need light, I put them under them anyway, as they had not sprouted in a week and it's cold in my house (I was getting impatient!). I don't have a warming mat yet, and perhaps the warmth from the light helped them(?)...it could have just been their time to sprout anyway, but I figured that it couldn't hurt much to do it. The seedlings are now happy under the lights, so I suppose if one has no other light alternatives, the under cabinet setup could work, with the right accommodations. With the success that has been made with the setups that many gardeners here have talked about(I'm referencing shop lights, but I am sure there are others), I probably wouldn't buy a light meter. The cost isn't prohibitive, but as a newbie, I don't know if I'd feel the need for it just yet...of course, I am a gadget gal, and as I learn more over time that may change.

Interesting, never had a problem with the PVC pipe getting brittle over 6 years now. As for the co2. I have my structures inclosed with 6 mil construction plastic. That only last about a year outside. 18 months inside. I have a small 7" clamp fan for air circulation and a water bowl for humitity. You can buy used computer fans but I like the air circulation better with the larger fan. The weight is handled by using a middle pole. The shelves are made from plywood cut into 2'x4' pieces. I don't glue it, just drill hole at all joints and use plastic wire ties to join it all together. I simply visit construction sites for the materials. Shake a few hands and get plenty of left over scrap. The concrete forms they lay floors with are plywood. A piece gets busted they throw it away and make another. I get the PVC, wire for the electric, pipe glue, etc all from construction sites. The tubes I get from janitors at government buildings, schools and businesses. The fans are from the yearly Spring cleaning trash day we have. In fact we have another one coming up next month. Best thing is they can be taken apart and stored.

I will post pics the minute the stork drops them off! lol.. I was wrong on the date of my barrel . I got them in 91. So that makes them 22yrs old! Now I feel old! OMG! lol.. Info I have found online so far says they bloom after they reach 14". Mine are that at least. I'm not sure If I have a pic from last year ? I'll look and see. If not, it will be blooming again soon. It's not fancy, pretty small actually, but special to me after having the plant for so long!

Seven tube per shelf monster seed starting setup

Just finished the second shelf of seven tubes so now have 14 tubes total, seven per a shelf. With all seven tubes on and my reflective space blankets closed up all around it gets up to 88 degrees inside, but by opening one side I can reduce that to 70 degrees. By playing around with how much ventilation I allow I can probably get any temperature I want in the 70 to 88 degree range. I also have a humidity gauge and the relative humidity is running around 70 percent with the blankets closed, in fact I get some condensation on the inside of the blanket. I also installed an insulating rubber pad on the shelf and covered it with aluminum foil to reflect back any lost light. I am now debating whether I should add a third shelf of seven lights while I can still get the fluorescent strip lights for $1.99 each (just the bare fixture and ballast, no bulb or power cord).

Hi Diane,

You might want to check out your local sewage district website for a rainbarrel. Milwaukee sells them for 23 bucks.

Thanks for the great tip - those things run around $100 in the various gardening supply catalogs! But ... why would a sewage district have such a barrel (maybe some of the processing chemicals come in them?) and would I really want to use water that came out of one? I will definitely check it out, but am just curious.

If my local sewage authority doesn't sell them ... does Milwaukee ship? ;-)

Here is where I got my Barrel they are former food Barrel, Greek Peppers to be exact. They are affordable and all Prices include Shipping.

The rain barrels are sold to reduce the strain on our storm sewers. The barrels are only available locally and they're the same barrels sold online in some garden sites. Your's might sell them also and they're a steal at the price. I'm picking up a couple for the house.
