climbing rose for north wall? appreciate suggestions!

My home faces north, and i would love to grow a rose around the front, a managable rose (not a house eater!). I grow mainly antique and english, but open to anything, except REALLY strong colors.

I see homes in my neighborhood with roses on north walls and have asked a few homeowners who don't know what they are...their landscaper put them in. I'll post pictures if and when I figure out how!!

Sunwise?? A touch of morning sun for a few months of the year, at the earliest hours of sunrise, and ditto for late evening. but mainly bright light.

It is nuts!! I see roses growing in very shaded areas, and ALWAYS want to pull over and find out what they are. But many times, it looks like they have just been there for years. Once, I think it was BALLERINA, which I could do. or PROSPERITY?

manageable and not dagger-type thorns are a MUST!

Any suggestions appreciated. I do see the lists of 'partial shade roses', but I think north wall may be different.

mme gregoire staechelin - this rose is made for a north wall. not repeating but early and with a long bloom period - also, the most lovely foliage.
An Austin, Snowgoose is pretty good in shade too.
Mme Alfred Carriere is reputed to be good on a north wall but it is anything but mannerly.
Yep, Zephirine is also a good one with a rather lot of caveats (mildew, mainly)
Finally, a little Chris Warner patio climber, Open Arms is really rather good in this position, as is another of his, Laura Ford.

I think you'll enjoy her, monsoon99. I don't know anywhere you can walk in and buy a canned plant of her anymore. I have begged a few locals to include her in their mixes, even promising to promote them as sources, but so far, no takers. I wish I had the abiltiy... You should be able to purchase her on line from Burlington, Rogue Valley and Vintage. They will all be small plants which can be encouraged to grow more rapidly if planted in a can to keep the roots warm. GHat is excellent own root. The Ventura County Rose Society Auction should be in spring and they often have plants of her included. If you are of the "immediate gratification" mentality (NOT a judgement, simply a suggestion), you CAN plant more than one, but I personally wouldn't as it is NOT needed. One will easily cover the area you've stated and won't out grow it, where two very likely will and possibly give you too dense a plant, allowing for greater potential for disease issues. Grandmother's Hat is very healthy, but CAN black spot under the right conditions. ANY rose can have health issues under the right conditions. Some are just more prone to it than others. This one is a survivor! Which Laguna are you asking about? There are three on HMF and I haven't grown any of them. Don Juan you should be able to find most nurseries and garden centers (NOT "home improvement stores") that sell canned roses. It can be a little slow getting started, but that is a characteristic of large flowered climbers which flower heavily. A plant can usually bloom or grow. Few do both as well all the time. There will be equivalent roots to balance long canes and the plant is going to grow those before it puts out the wood. Finding one already started in a can, preferably from last year or earlier, will allow you more immediate gratification. Dortmund...well, it can be a very good rose. It's excellent for harsh, arctic type climates. I have one at a client's house in Old Orchard, Valencia. She loves it. It is VIGOROUS, terribly prickly, glossy, dark green foliage and it will mildew on the peduncles and prickles in these climates. It flowers reliably and needs deadheading to force repeat flowering faster. It will repeat without it, but it isn't as "tidy", so that will depend upon your taste and how OCD you are about maintenance. My client loves it for two reasons, it was a plant installed in the garden by a very loved friend who designed it in the first place and who has sinced passed away, and it reminds her of Bougainvillea, which is not sufficiently cold hardy there. I frequently hack large hunks of it off to keep it on her wall, cut out large clusters of spent flowers and hips and at least once a month, have to hose it out to remove all the debris and spider webs it collects. I appreciate it for the accomplishment it is in breeding. I do find the foliage attractive, sort of like plastic holly; it does impress me with the quantity and reliability of bloom for such a cold hardy rose being grown in a warmer climate. I agree it is a suitable replacement for a Bougainvillea where bougies won't grow, or are 'iffy'. Do I want one in my garden? Um, no. Would I use it for breeding? Perhaps. It's more a personal taste issue. Is it a good rose? In many ways, yes, very. It keeps the neighbors on their side of the wall and covers twenty feet of unattractive concrete block. It does what it is supposed to and makes its owner happy. It makes me happy to be able to keep it looking good to keep her smiling. Dortmund should be fairly readily available canned. Again, a more developed one will provide more immediate gratification. A repeat blooming Cl. Mlle. Cecile Brunner...probably your best bet is going to be buying one on line from a source which states theirs is from the reliable repeater. An easier way would likely be to buy a Spray Cecile Brunner. It's a more vigorous bush form which flowers continually and produces wood more elongated than the original seedling, yet not as over powering as the "climber". There is a range of traits a climbing sport can express. Observing a large block of Iceberg will illustrate that perfectly. You'll find anything from more dwarf, very lightly prickled to nearly prickle free all the way to seven foot "bushes" with large, sharply hooked prickles. It isn't an either-or, but a continuum. Where the genes of the bud used to create that particular plant fell on that continuum determines what that particular plant is going to express. Climate and culture will massage that expression greatly. Mlle Cecile Brunner is one of the most bullet proof plants of any kind you can grow in Southern California. The more vigorous types tolerate heavier pruning better than the "dwarf" bush. Once established, it is rudely healthy; continuous flowering (unless you have the spring bloom climbing sport); extremely shade "tolerant" in this climate; a very "long suffering" plant which will often out last the gardeners and gardens in which it is planted. I love that it was named for the 8 year old daughter of Pernet's major competitor. In the early 80s, there was a lovely lady from the Riverside area who volunteered in the herb garden at the Huntington, and who had her mother's climbing Cecile. She made rose petal jelly from it. It was DELICIOUS! In our climate, you can plant Mutabilis, the Banksias and Cecile and they will just GROW! They're seldom afflicted by any pests or diseases and will out grow anything thrown at them. If you want something very similar in a slightly different color, take a look at Perle d'Or, often called yellow or apricot Cecile Brunner. It isn't available as a climber, but it is as gorgeous and wonderful as Cecile. If it helps, Grandmother's Hat, Perle d'Or and all forms of Cecile Brunner are frequently found in old gardens and cemeteries where they've been forgotten and just allowed to do their own thing. Thanks everyone. I have also posted on the rose forum and got some very good suggestions, including not planting Altissimo which I agree with. I have a cecile brunner somewhere else and would never plant another one. It is too aggressive and blooms once a year but what a show those few weeks. What a beautiful garden renee and that climber looks gorgeous. I will check out all the suggestions. Also the house is a mediterranean style home and there isn't much landscaping in it yet but I am leaning towards olive trees and lavendars in the general areas where this wall stands. BTW the wall is part of the main house on a two storey home. The climber will have an 8 by 13 space to grow on SS wires against this wall. Thanks again.

Well fancy that - another vote for Crepuscule from me...if for no other reason than it's colouring...which would fit rather well against those soft brick tones. As a plus, Creps is a very forgiving rose with a generous framework which will loll about, fulsomely, against the brickwork while obligingly hurling out a few nice flexible canes to extend it's presence. Not sure what you mean by longevity but it is dangerously enthusiastic in my garden, hopefully persisting past the autumn frosts, bravely hanging a few blooms till Xmas...and I have seen a few aging specimens - (benefits from a sporadic bit of brutish hacking every decade or so) but can largely be left alone. However (there is always one of those) I have seen it looking a bit miserable when it is dry at the roots...and it does have a tendency to mildew (but this might not be an issue in Tx) I suspect I would be avoiding some of the more strident pinks or reds, but possibly some of the deeper reds might be good for you - Etoile de Hollande, Guinee - although I am rubbish at any of these which always look spindly, mean and are swinish to grow gracefully. YMMV obs but, having only failed with these climbers (they always look so...precious...and finicky but most of all, sparse), Might also be tempted to tuck a cheerful annual such as mina lobata or the little amber climber - ecremocarpus scaber somewhere while Crepsuscule fills out. If you have a sunny aspect, Gloire de Dijon - rubbish rose for me but well grown in heat it is glorious indeed...and finally, to finish off on another warm apricot note, I would be expecting Ingrid to chime in with praise for climbing Lady Hillingdon.

I have a lot of Austins but I don't have Scepter' Isle. The reason is that it has a very strong myrrh and that is not my favourite scent for a rose. I also like a bloom that stays fairly tidy and this one tends to look fragile. Austins do really well in the PNW in regards to disease problems but some do turn into a soggy mess in a downpour. They also require a rich diet and lots of water which of course they get naturally in the spring and the fall. In my opinion, Austin has bred better soft pinks.I find it interesting on the forum in that with the Austins people has the greatest variance of opinions. If Caruth or Zary put out a good rose, everyone seems to agree that it is a good rose but not the Austins.

New Dawn is a wonderful shell pink rose reportedly for a north wall...it is gorgeous and very highly rated. The Chicago Botanic Gardens has it tumbling up and over a pergola and it is breathtaking, so romantic! I don't have a picture, but you could easily find one on google images.

Just to be clear, when you say you "would love to grow a rose around the front", are you saying ON the wall itself or in front of the wall?

What color is your house? OR what color is your brick?

msjam2. beautiful picture! i have ZD and she doesn't like me. and the rebloom is scant. but she is certainly happy where you have her!

campanula, i will check into MGS, lovely foliage is a real plus!! and Snowgoose, as the David Austin usa location is close to me. I have MAC, and she does have a mind of her own, but i do like her. haven't heard of Open Arms or Laura Ford...i'll investigate.

vicky and merilia, while i do love New Dawn, I have it, and hate to repeat flowers. I don't get alot of repeat with mine, a shame, as the bloom is so lovely and delicate.

lou, yes, i left out some basics!! what i mean, is on the front wall of my north facing khaki/green tinted painted brick home. soft colors look best, and whites with a tint are a good choice here. i have mainly old roses, so pastels and reds. but, i think pastels for the front would be my first choice.

all good ideas, should have specified a few things...

REPEAT BLOOM, MANAGEABLE, NOT KILLER THORNS, PASTEL, NOT A HOUSE EATER!!

AND of course, NORTH FACING WALL OF HOME. TWO STORY.

I have the old hybrid musk Pax growing in mostly shade in front of our front steps. It climbed 15 feet up, so it should be able to climb up your wall, and you are in zone 8, so that should be warm enough. Pax's blooms are a very soft white to off white. It is semi-double, so should be OK in your humidity. It blooms all Summer. Look it up on HMF and see what you think. I do not spray, and it is healthy.

Zepphie has the virtue of being thornless or nearly so. Crepuscule is thornless as well (or nearly so--I found a single prickle on one of mine).

ilovemyroses, I have Sallie Holmes growing on my home's north wall - the front of the house. She is very happy there. I keep branches pruned off that want to lean out too far and tie the others periodically to a trellis attached to the brick. She brightens up the brick and has luxuriant foliage. BTW, I live in Waxahachie so our climates are approximately the same.

Another white that would brighten up your brick is Lamarque. I have one on a large freestanding trellis and it is doing well even though it was slow to get started. I must say that the blooms on Sallie -- even though single -- are much showier than Lamarque's which brown quickly and remain on the plant.

My Zeffie is gorgeous right now, but blooms are sparse throughout the summer. I get a few again in fall, but not a lot.

I love them all, but this is my experience. I also think Sallie has the most beautiful foliage. Lou

hoovb, thanks for those wonderful pictures!! i love the trellis! and the clemantis, i have killed a few of those, but want to master that! which one is that, if you know??
crep. is a contender. the color could be nice!

lou, sallie keeps coming up when i search!! AND, I don't have her, and you say the foliage is pretty!! I do have Lamarque elsewhere and love the color and winter blooms, but hate to repeat! and good to know she grooms herself. some roses that keep their old blooms do look ratty. I'll see if I can get Sallie locally. Where do you get your roses, since we are nearby?

thanks all!! great ideas, at this point i'd say sallie and crep. are in the lead!! with Pax to be investigated.

I can't remember where I got Sallie and I don't have access to my receipts right now. I've bought most of my roses from Petal Pushers in Cedar Hill (formerly Kings Creek Gardens), but they are no longer in business. (A lot of their roses had tags from Antique Rose Emporium and Chamblees.)

I've also ordered from Chamblees and ARE and a few businesses outside the State. If you are close to North Haven Gardens, you might try there. Every time I drive to the north side of the Metroplex, I think about stopping. Then I remind myself that I just don't have space for more roses. Ha! Famous last words!

lou, i did, just that today. went to North Haven gardens, my favorite dallas nursery for everything, esp. roses.

they did have Sallie Holmes, however she was grafted!! can't imagine she needs that!! i left her, they had several, and thought i'd still research it a bit. but, i may be back. she was pretty, just didn't expect the graft. is yours? i just hate dr. huey, and have a few spots in my yard where i battle him, and wasn't up for more.

still thinking on this, as I too, have no more room.

(unless i take in more grass!!)

My vote would be for Crepuscule, one of my all time favorites. Divine color, blooms all the time. Another I have that grows in alot of shade and blooms its head off is Blush Noisette, has a nice scent too. Antique Rose Emporium has it - I was just there and bought another one. Nix New Dawn - vicious thorns. I have 2 Sally Holmes. One was in shade, not doing much, moved it in full sun and it is glorious so dont know how it would do with less sun. Dont know if mine are grafted or not - but doesnt make any difference - they are both growing beautifully.

Glad to hear about SH. I may do that. I don't think the color of Crep. Would be good on my brick. Yes, BN is one I don't have and have admired. Ballerina could work too, I dont need size.
