For ornamental grasses, which manual pruners do you use?
Comments (19)Thank you much everyone for this very interesting, educational, humorous thread!!! I came searching, as all I've had to deal with all my years, were tools of mowing engagements! Having grown up in as asphalt jungle (not the movie!) I fell in love with the smell of fresh cut grass! Am 4'10" (now I was told grew older to less1" ~ just my luck!) & for years before the advent of electric mowers I used to hop on top of the darned machine just to be able to start it ~ nearly lost my fingers reaching for clogged grass etc etc ~ didn't want to start machine over & over! So now you know ... I am that *priceless* image Carl18 vividly etched in your mind ~ *73y/o lady wrestling w/ Sawz-All* (by the way I think I'd love it!) Oh & I can always count on ken for injecting a bit to laugh! All I know about Ornamental Grass is admire them on people's landscape & am now for the first time brain-storming about what to do w/ a NE corner after cutting down a very old limb-dropping/breaking Crabapple tree where all the large Hostas now burning! No, not the regular Pampas ~ I know enough to avoid! I couldn't find the young neighbor to ask, what he planted that looks neat, upright, columnar, tallish & offers privacy (for me a blind from the dogs behind)! I googled & marked *Morn' Light, K Foerster, Heavy Metal, Dallas Blue* ~ any pros & cons would be appreciated! TIA!...See More1. Are Woodzig AC model 40268 chain available in North, TX?
Comments (6)The Woodzig chain is based upon a modified single jack chain. You might be able to reconnect and straighten out using needle nose pliers. Also, if you buy some Jack Chain of approriate size, you can replace a link, although you won't be cutting at that particular spot. Best bet is to temporarily repair and then follow Ebay until some comes up and bid on it, unless price is to high. Myself, I keep using until I wear out my two chains. At $50 plus a pair, new ones are too expensive, and I'll junk the machine. I already have Olympyk (Efco) professional pruning saw, but the Woodzig is handy for small jobs....See MoreBest manual pole saw/pole pruner?
Comments (20)Aliska, "What would be the cheapest, lightest, blade-replaceable one for a woman in her 60's whose arms aren't that strong any more?" "Cheapest" and "lightest" don't tend to go together in pole saws. And even the lightest pole saws are somewhat unwieldy to use and can be tiring. I'm in pretty good physical condition, but using a pole saw can be tiring for me. By trial and error, I have developed some techniques that make the job a bit easier. I raise the pole to the vertical position before extending its length. And I always lean the pole saw on the tree at every opportunity. But when you saw through a limb, the pole saw is no longer leaning against it and you have to be ready to "catch" the pole. There may be a good, cheap pole saw that would be good for you, but I don't know what it is. "Good" and "cheap" don't usually go together. MM...See MoreNeed electric pole saw
Comments (16)Good Report Nancy!, Can you share a pic of the trimming? At what height approx are you trimming? The electric with the motor in your hand is what I feel would be ideal at greater heights. I see young tree trimmers using them like a dream maybe 8-10’ extended. I like to use my Electric Remington Pole Saw on some jobs on the ground where reach is involved (to work at a distance) There is a version that fits with Troy Bilt 4 Cycle trimmers (combo sets) with not as much reach (maybe 8’) that I am sure are lighter. Electric is still my best option and the Troy Bilt has the electric Jump Start or pull stare. There is probably a shoulder supported pouch that will help with either. I was tempted to make contact almost straight up (managing weight) and take a few steps back as I cut (with the motor at the top or bottom… A bit Heave becomes heavy at a point. Trust Me (LOL)!!! Hopefully someone will share their experiences with the Troy Bilt 4-Cycle with Combo Attachments as how useful and durable they are if you need multiple tools… At a distance I saw my neighbor trim low limbs. I saw a different neighbor use his Blower. I would guess they all will work on their level “If Needed and At A Reasonable Cost Per Item”!!!...See Morebill4020
