Building the HFGH 8x10

Well, I am at day 3 of building the Harbor Freight 8x10 Greenhouse. The directions are TERRIBLE, I had to drill some holes and modify things a bit, but I am very pleased so far! Here is a link to the photos....

OK, day 3 of the "project"...and I am pretty much done building the structure. It's too windy to try to put the panels in- I'll do that tomorrow. The doors are VERY hard to move - they are sticky at the top. I am hoping once I tighten everything and then maybe grease the up, they will slide better. Anyone have suggestions for this? I updated the Picasa album with pics from today...

Hello brumor,

Well, that didn't take you long either!

I don't think I can repeat what my husband had to say about the door on this forum; aside from some grumbling about how it wouldn't take me long to break it.

Anyway, he thought it necessary to reinforce the back wall so he fashioned two diagonal braces out of what appears to have been tracks from an old shower enclosure.

In the meantime, I'm still applying the vinyl foam weatherseal. If it sticks as good to the greenhouse as it does to my shoes, we'll be in good shape.

There's another neighbor in our area who has a 6x8. You can read about his/hers on your original thread.

BTW: Your helpers are adorable!

Hi Terri, here's a thread showing funnylady's photos of her two 10x12 HFGHs joined together: Two HFGH 10x12 Greenhouses Joined Together Also, rosepedal has joined two of them together, and there are some photos at the end of this thread showing the new one being added to the back of her existing greenhouse: We're Going Saturday rosepedal (Barb) may have posted more recent pics somewhere, and I may have missed or forgotten them (been helping my Mom get through several hospital adventures this summer, and I have fewer brain cells lately!) A 4x6 joist is only slightly stiffer than a 2x8 joist. But at an 8-foot span, 2x6 is plenty stiff (Code max deflection occurs around 10-foot spans). So your question really relates to joist spacing, not joist span/size. I think 32" O/C between joists is stretching it. It will certainly work, but I think it might be a little bouncy in spots for some people -- comparable to, say, using 2x6 joists 16" O/C with a 12-foot span. I myself would probably stay at 24" O/C. In your case, it's easy enough to simulate a Best Case with some cinderblock and a couple of planks.

Here's some more pictures of the bracing. As you can see the weather is better today so I was able to work. Tonight after the kids go to bed I'll seal the ends of the panels with caulk so they can cure. This is the side wall where the corner braces and side wall braces connect. They are anchored at the top of three center most studs. Showing where the ones connect on the back wall And a closer view on the back wall. Bracing this wall is mandatory as far as I can tell. Far too much give in it as designed. This thing is rock solid now. Its going to take some major wind to hurt it. I'm a huge fan of this green house and the design (for the most part). The track design to hold the bolts makes adding stuff down the road super easy. I'm already thinking of adding bolts to let me attach shade cloth to the inside of the roof. Grommets in the shade cloth and fender washers would allow you to attach the cloth right to the ceiling snugly. The back wall at the peak is just begging for a fan too. I won't caulk the panels in so I can take them out to add things to the structure as needed. Oh the options are endless!!!!!!!

We redid our master bath not long ago, and I struggled with one long/two shorter mirror options. I found this process helpful: Assuming your big mirror is still in place - use painter's tape on the mirror to mark two outlines the size of the individual mirrors you might want above each sink. Cover the middle section between the outlines with a roll of kraft paper or butcher paper (or even the back side of a gift wrap roll) to simulate a blank wall in between them. If you have a long "Hollywood" bar light across the top of the whole thing, unscrew the bulbs in the center to simulate having two smaller fixtures over the mirrors. ( To be even more realistic, mock up a tower in the center to see what impact that has. You could stack up narrow boxes, or buy a $15 sheet of Styro insulation and fabricate the approximate shape.) Evaluate what you see in the outlined areas that represent two smaller mirrors. You may still see the shower and toilet as very close. You may find that you don't like the loss of reflected light in the middle, or that the tower casts shadows. Or maybe you'll like what you see and it will reassure you that change will be good! In our case, we stayed with the long mirror. We preferred the additional light, and found it more appealing in our space to use three new lights over one mirror over two sinks, rather than the rigid symmetry of two sinks/two mirrors/two lights. The reinforcement for the back- was that to help the door in some way? I am concerned about the doors- the tops barly move at all on the tracks. It's like it is too tight or something.
Where are you putting the vinyl weatherseal?
I also need to order some extra clips I guess. Maybe screw the panels in?
And, yea, I got a lot of help from those two!

Reinforcing the back was for added strength with no relationship to the door.

I followed directions for the vinyl weatherseal at mudhouse's blog. Scroll halfway down to "Caulk or Weatherstrip?"

Thanks mrs. v, hope some of the info helps. This forum is so full of great info I am happy to try to pass some of it on.

Adding that weatherseal really slowed down the installation of our panels, but I'm glad I did it. And yes it does stick to your shoes or shirt or anywhere it wanders, LOL! I found over time even the unsticky side makes a nice seal with the poly panels (maybe our summer heat bakes it on?) so the air seal is really quite good.

Any husband creative enough to fashion sturdy greenhouse braces out of shower enclosure tracks is worth keeping around! :-)

Greetings mudhouse!

I don't mind the delay caused by adding the weatherseal. I'd rather get it right from the start. Thanks to you and all the fine folks who took time to document their collective talent and ideas on this forum, Brumor and I have the advantage of planning ahead and avoiding headaches later.

Update:

ThereÂs a new crosspiece on the center back wall of the greenhouse. ItÂs for mounting the electrical box. My guess is that it may have been a metal threshold in its previous life.

Another added feature is a piece of EMT (extending from front to back) that is supported by two triangular brackets at each gable. A fluorescent light will hang from it. IÂm told the braces were crafted from aluminum windowsills. ItÂs going to be a unique greenhouse!

I suspect DH ran out of recyclable material today considering he made a trip to Home Depot. But, you never know!

One of my favorite old sayings (that seems to be much forgotten by many people today): "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

I remember this saying while staring at the expensive rack of new aluminum stock at Lowes and Home Depot, LOL. (Now, where was that scrap aluminum we saved...and what could we make out of THIS odd piece?)

Looks like we have a new crop of HFGH'ers and the directions have not changed.

Don't get discouraged. When your done you'll have a great little greenhouse for the price. I'm on my second year and waiting for the weather to get beyond freezing nights before I fill it up again.

Oh yea...BTW- the new 8x10 HFGH does NOT have white panels in the front. The web site show white panels, and when you call them they will tell you they are white. I almost didn't buy the kit because I thought they were going to be white!
