Cool, interesting bud mutation. Foliage looks same size as species and is growing quick for a new mutation, however the culitvar 'Kelleriis' appears glaucous on Google images. Here it's definitely a golden color mutation and not a combination of mutations overlying from the original. I'd call this a sport, indeed. Dax

Hi Edwin, just grafted up a dozen about an hour ago. Plenty of cones, but haven't got the time , space or inclination to bother with them. Mark, what you're asking sounds a little complicated, and I believe it's more simplistic than that, so I will try and answer the best I can. There are thousands of brooms that have been collected, especially in recent years, many if not most will be only of interest to the finder, and serious collectors. Names, numbers, and codes are only a means of identification and of course are necessary for that purpose only.Just because a particular broom/cultivar is grafted onto a different rootstock or grown in other conditions that may or may not alter it's appearance in some way does not constitute it being varietal. This should only apply to conifers growing in the wild, where a stand of a particular species varies from another growing somewhere else for example. Unfortunate that these differences do occur especially in grafted conifers I know, but that's how it is. You can't go giving a plant another name just because it behaves differently on another rootstock or grows in another environment. Besides I believe many of these plant are likely to settle down after many years, and any changes are less apparent. Can't see any problems regarding 'gene pools' as all brooms, sports, deliberate crosses are all really for cultivated use, and would not survive in the wild, so not likely to affect/cross pollinate with wild stands...if that is the point you are trying to make ? The known history and ID of any given plant, is purely down to people keeping up to date records and tagging their plants correctly, can't imagine a time when there would never be any mix ups, that's human nature, and nothing to do with the volume of conifers in circulation, IMO
