Ariens snowblower repair.

I have an Ariens sno-thro model 10m4 (mid 60's). I need to replace the friction disc. (it's the one with the rubber on it bolted to the sprocket axle.) Can any one tell me the easiest/best way to replace this.It looks like the whole drive carriage is on two rods that can be removed to allow the carriage to pivet so the shaft can be removed.Am I on the right path or is there another procedure I should follow.There's a lot of parts in there and I dont want to remove something I dont need to.

Kirk: I actually just finished replacing mine on my Craftsman , I would assume the mechanics are the same. The Friction wheel rides on a axle shaft suppported by to bearing blocks which are connected to the chassis housing. If this is accurate with your unit then removal is allowed by removing the gear driven assembly from the chain drive. Mine was solid chain without master link perhaps yours has such. Sometimes if access is tight your may have tp remove your drive axle assembly also since the jackshaft that the friction disc is usually above it. Check yours out and it should appear rather straight forward , I would recommend a master link on your chain drives if yours only has one on the wheeled axle drive assembly . Good luck , perhaps someone can assist with illustration or Repair Manual for Kirk ? Don't forget to lubricate all bearing and chains , keep the friction disc & Friction Wheel clean from oil or grease.

I took one apart recently and had to remove the bearings on both sides of the hex steel rod. It was a little tricky to get the chain without a master link and the shaft to go back together. It was a first for me and took under an hour.

I just came across this forum and see that Dave is intrested in a light for an Ariens snowblower. I happen to have a new Ariens light kit in the box #7240 that is exactly what he is looking for. I had one of these back a few years ago on my Toro 5hp. blower, it worked great. It comes with the generator, light , hardware and instructions. One of the other fellows is correct, you do have to have a pull starter with the hole in the center, should be no problem, go to a repair shop and ask , they probably have one in their "boneyard". If intrested, email me and I can send pictures, I can let it go for 75.00, not bad considering its complete with the generator,it should work on brand snowblower with the hole in center as long as the generator can be mounted, thanks

Ab7: Both Manufacturers make a good Product . I have had issues with some damage on the Toro Chute controls due to freeze up . This damage was caused by operator error . The Ariens has old school metal chute requiring cleaning and waxing compared to abs plastic on the Toro and controls are old technology (Joy stick ) chute rotation is not available as on the Toro . Personnally I prefer the Ariens , both offer Briggs Engines and the pricing is comparative . I guess it's really up to your preference .

"Fair price on a used snowblower depends on condition." and model, size, and location.. Around here, (western NY) a "compact" Ariens like the 7524 is a "light duty" machine, and in less demand than a "full size" machine..and so prices would be lower.. but in areas with less snowfall, it would be a "normal" machine and would command a higher price.. I have also found that prices are higher, in general, for used snowblowers around the larger North-East cities..(Boston, New York city, Philly, etc) than they are in the "snow belts" of Western NY and the Great Lakes areas..where used machines are common as dirt and thus prices are generally lower..So, a lot depends on where you live! based what you posted (and not factoring in location) I agree that $350 to $400 is a good starting place..maybe $500 in Boston, but thats going to be an unlikely selling price.. Just took delivery today of the Ariens 926DLE. After inspecting it, this is the e-mail I sent to their customer support : Just purchased an Ariens 926DLE sno thro. To my dismay, the chute does not lock into position when I rotate it. I can get it to rotate but it won't lock in at certain positiions. Was kind of worried I might run into this problem when shop ping for snowblowers a few weeks back. I first looked at the Ariens for sale In Gerlachs garden and power equipment ,only one Ariens in the store had a chute mechanism that worked properly. Then I went down to Miller Brothers and looked at more Ariens sno thros , not one Ariens model in the entire store had a chute rotation mechanism that worked properly. Went back to Gerlachs and was assured the chute mechanism would work properly when adjusted before delivery. Today they delivered it and well... you guessed it. I just want to alert you to what appears to be a very poor design.The whole mechanism seems loose and simply does not work . I expected a much better engineered product from a company as well know as Ariens. I tried a last years model that has a little different chute rotation mechanism and it worked fine . Well , guess my next move is to call Gerlachs tomorrow and see what they say .

Baymee you did a fine job in just an hour. My son had to help me with alignment and replacing the cap screws into the chassis , for the Bearing Pillow Blocks , pretty well a two man job unless you have a special jig. I was pissed when I noticed that the Chain on the jack shaft was endless and it was Sunday so I could not find a master link. Have one now so will install prior to any other repairs lol. We will have to see how KT makes out.
