I just got in a shipment from Vintage Gardens. Some had nice think canes and really looked like they needed the 3 gallon pots. I potted these up. Others were very small with thin canes and looked like they even needed to stay in their band pots a while longer. These, I put in the greenhouse. They just looked too frail to have to deal with the colder weather we are getting. We are in the low 30's at night, sometimes down to 28. Think I will watch these carefully and let them grow in their band pots until after the holidays are over - then mix up a good potting mix and put them in gallon pots and leave them in the greenhouse, putting them out on any nice warmer days we might have. This is Texas after all - so 70 degree days in January are not out of the question. I got a shipment in a few weeks ago from Vintage - potted them all up in gallons and left them outside and some of those are even putting out a bit of new growth, so think they are fine. In San Antonio, you all will get warmer weather quicker than I will - I think you are wise to let them stay in the greenhouse until mid/late February. Don't forget to let them acclimate to weather outside the greenhouse but putting them out a few hours a day before you get ready to plant them out. You will enjoy watching them grow in the greenhouse - I also start daylily seeds in the greenhouse during the winter. Judith

Eloise, finally a response that I expected! lol Many of the plants that I collect would certainly not be called beautiful. Odd, weird and even ugly is more like it. I'm more interested in plants that aren't commonly seen. I do collect a good deal of classically beautiful plants that have spectacular foliage and/or blooms but probably have more "unusual" varieties. One day soon I'll have to stop by the warehouse and take pics of lots of the cut flowers and plants. I was just too cold to stay in the coolers for more then a few minutes. I don't know how their pickers can stand it. I'm so bad that I sit in the office and use the security cameras to view what I want DH to bring home. lol I did like those weird green ruffled garden roses but they were a bit too expensive. DH's cost on those is almost $4 per stem. Your standard Charlotte or Cherry Love (reds) are anywhere from 14 to 40 cents, depending on length and time of year. It's not just because of a holiday that prices go up, it's availability. Farms don't have much time between Christmas and Valentine's to produce a flower to cutting size.

Yes..you can plant now..anytime the ground is no longer frozen and the soil workable and ESPECIALLY since you see your other clematis starting to leaf out and grow..I don't think Dan would ship unless it was time..have fun...Jeanne

raiun42, I apologize for not being able to answer this question myself, personally (I am just the webmaster for Willis Orchards, and well versed in the actual plants themselves), however if you do not receive an answer by the time I get to work tomorrow (I have a class beforehand, and normally arrive at work around 12:30-ish) then I will be sure to inquire to Jason about your question, and see what he states, then get back to you with an answer.
