My HFGH is ready for Spring

Built this HFGH last Spring, but was a little late to get things started. This year me and the LL are ready to go. Just installed a propane heater, now need to be able to aford the gas. Ordered 3 rolls of bubble insulation from Charlies and it's on the way. Hope that helps.

Joe, great site. I sure recognize the befuddled looks on the faces of the ladies poring over the manual (DH and I had that same expression, but I think your group looks a good deal calmer than we were.) Your finished shelves and potting bench are great too. It sure does look like you are all ready for spring!

And wow, your Irish potting shed is just plain beautiful, as is your whole garden setting. I have bookmarked your site to see future progress! Really nice photos.

Thanks for the comments. I plan on taking some more pics of construction details. Just got the heater in, now I need a 100# tank to supply it.

I have checked over your blog and found a lot of info that I wished I was aware of last year. I have recently gone over your info again. Great job.

Yes for the money it is good. You must do the extra work to make it work. Sherry's advice is great along with others depending upon your climate. We live in a harsh climate zone 4 lots of snow and wind this year and it is still standing yahoo! Thanks to everyone here. I would buy another one but I have hopes to have one like greenhousers next. The Rion.... If you have the money I would go with the Rion not that I dislike the HFGH I do like it alot. My neighbors son came over and looked at ours (they have a homemade leanto) They liked ours so much they went and bought one. You are in alabama so you will not have to worry about snow as much. I would defanetly go for it for the price. Good luck and keep us posted..... Barb

RE: heaters Just to give you a starting point on heaters, the on-line calculator shows the following for a 10 X 12 double polycarb GH. Assuming a desired inside temp. of 70 deg. F, if lowest outside= 20 deg. - need 14000 btu/hr 10 deg. - 16800 0 deg. - 19600 -10 deg. - 22400

Hello Dale, I'd also enjoy seeing photos of your greenhouse! Good heavens, 80mph gusts is a very impressive wind speed to survive. We have bad winds here, but I am a bit relieved that my 10x12 has not been tested to that degree yet! How to get ready for Spring!

You have got to fertilize the plants throughout the season, regardless of what Mel says. I use synthetic, and at the suggested frequency/rate that my local extension office suggests for any variety of plant. Make a big pile of leaves, grass clippings, and other ingredients - then put a big tarp over it. Weight the corners down with cinder blocks, and you should do pretty good. EG

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing your HFGH go from pieces to completion... well done! Thank you for sharing your experience! I wish you and the LL many happy days of greenhouse growing!

We just purchased the 10' x 12' model, and will be constructing it this coming spring... I'm really glad to know that it was money well spent... we have the boxes sitting in the garage, awaiting warmer days and a leveled place to begin the building process!

I, too, have bookmarked your site, and am looking forward to future photos and comments!

Spring is just around the corner. I see that you are in zone 5 too. Where abouts?

I just received my shipment of bubblewrap and I'm in the process of applying it. Hope to save on fuel.

Post some pics and you proceed in your construction. Make a party out of it.
