Callicarpa Dichotoma 'Early Amethyst'

I purchased two callicarpa dichotoma three years ago and they are doing wonderfully in my garden. Each year they seem to get bigger and more beautiful.

They do seem to re-seed like crazy, and I'm constantly finding new seedlings and pulling them out. I kept a few of the seedlings and planted them along the foundation of my home, but these don't want to bloom or get berries on them!

Any experts out there happen to know the reason?

This is only the second growing season for these seedlings -are they too immature, perhaps?

I've read from several sources that these are "PPAF" plants, so I'm thinking the cultivar won't come true from seed.

I'd really like to be able to give some of the seedlings away to admiring friends/neighbors but it seems as if there's no point if they won't grow as the parents do.

Any help is much appreciated as there doesn't seem to be any information out there.

Early Amethyst is not a ppaf (plant patent applied for) variety and this has nothing to do with coming true from seed. Your seedlings are most likley just imature at will flower as they reach maturity.

My experience with seeding Calicarpa is that there is little variation in the seedlings are most all look just like the parents.

Just be patient and you will get flowers and berries.

The beautyberries usually do best in groupings because their foliage is often rather plain/neutral during much of their growing season and they can form a mass of "background". Only thing is whether you would want to block its best feature - the berries - unless you have something short - medium height (eg., small to medium perennials) in front. Also note the color of the berries and consider carefully what you put in front. If the front border has plants that bloom through fall, you want to consider possible color clashes with the berries! I think everyone has an idea of a personal "best" for foundations - whether deciduous or evergreen. So sometimes you just have to see what others have put together and decide whether you have similar enough conditions to try it.

I saw that black berried form at the arb the other day and was wondering if that was freeze damage or normal coloring. I did see plenty of wild beautyberry on my big drive out west last month - even found a patch of gold leaved ones in Arkansas. Dana - if Annie hasn't sent you any berries I brought some back from my parents place. They have to go through two winters to sprout. I'm gonna try nicking some of the seed coat off to try and speed things up. The hybrid Snowberries that are for sale this season do have a better look overall than the wild form. And once established the wild form is hard to weed out - very tough roots and stems, even though the plant looks delicate.
