Does the American Rose Society have recommendations on rose rosette? I found articles on their website. When contacting the local society, it would appear they believe there are large numbers of herbicide damage being mistaken as rosette, and there is just no way to tell attitude. I was hoping to find someone besides myself, and the local extension to confirm to others that what is present is actually rosette. I thought if there was a rose expert I could recommend to my HOA to consult with maybe they would wake up. I viewed pictures of herbicide damage, and it looks different. The local extension agent knows the difference, and has seen the difference. My fear is others may take the it is just herbicide damage no worries here attitude. Another resident removed diseased bushes, I wanted to cry when I saw it, because I was so happy someone actually paid attention. Anyone know if you can get arrested from taking photos at public places considered private property such as shopping centers?

Henry, The mite movement by insects is based on several articles from Kansas long before Dr. Cloyd was a gleam in his parents' eyes. The mites were observed on wheat as they left the wheat via aphids. The mites were in such abundance that they were visible as heaving masses crawling up the wheat and encountering aphids and riding the aphids as they left. The articles aren't about roses, nor are they about the RRV virus, nor are the eriophyids the same. Dr. Cloyd may or may not be responsible for the major decrease in info on RRD in the second edition of the Compendium. There is a lot less in the second edition than in the first. Which is a shame. Citing his coauthorship of the Compendium doesn't make him a strong RRD researcher. The mite info in the Kansas two pager is based on Jim Amrine's work with the mites and their life cycle and it's condensed. The "may" on insect enhanced movement is a CYA statement. I met Dr. Cloyd whom I encouraged to get together with Dr. Fred Crowe to compare the current state of RRD in Kansas and the Kansas City area. Two different scientists working in the same place but decades apart and then comparing notes have a potential to help us all in the future. At the summit, I spent many hours with Jim Amrine. This was a continuation of our talking and visiting over the past ten+ years. Cleaning pruners makes sense, esp for spreading bacterial diseases, most of which are ill known on roses. Sharper secateurs are also important as they are more likely to make tight, sealing cuts across the vascular system of the plants, making the entry of virus particles less likely. Doderick was unable to infect roses and his published paper talks about the different methods he tried of physical inoculation. Aprille, Welcome to Texas! I am not in the Dallas area, but live close enough to the metroplex to follow what's going on with the roses there. I just think the timing right now is not the best for rose lovers in the Dallas area. RRV has become quite a problem in Dallas over the last several years. Word was, it was an epidemic last year. I know one woman in Dallas that had over 100 roses in her back yard and lost every one of them last year. Her neighbors lost all their roses last year, too. I went to a seminar this spring with Dr. Steve George and he said they were even battling RRV at the Earthkind Trial Garden in Farmers Branch. He also stated to be very careful to purchase your roses from reputable dealers because he had seen roses for sale that had RRV. I could never imagine a garden without roses, but for now, I would start small and stay vigilant. I don't know if this happens, but I am hoping that RRV will reach its peak, and that the number of outbreaks will then start to fall. I would also look around your new neighborhood and educate the neighbors that have infected roses before I planted new rose bushes. The problem is that most of the people that have just a few roses don't know anything about RRV. One woman told me she drove around several Dallas neighborhoods last year and saw bush after bush showing signs of infection, but that no one she talked to had ever heard of RRV. Good luck. I hope the number of cases of RRV in the Dallas area begins to go down, and that you will be able to have the rose garden of your dreams without very many losses to RRV.

I'm concerned about this slide show. Its liable to send newbys into a panic and cause them to rip out perfectly good roses as soon as they show signs of new growth. Many roses will normally have reddish new growth. Emphasis should be made that reddish new growth is diagnostic only if it is not normal for that variety of rose. Many roses will have very vigorous new growth that is very thorny compared to the older canes. Many roses throw excessivly vigorous basil canes that look very different than exsisting canes. Experienced rosarians know what is normal for a rose and abnormal growth stands out like a sore thumb. The same cannot be said for those who are less experienced. Any talk about rose rosette disease should emphasize that anyone who is not sure if their roses have rose rosette disease should contact a local consulting rosarian through their local rose society for a diagnosis before panicing and ripping out roses. Thats what consulting rosarians are there for. Round up damage will affect new growth and if the rose normally has reddish new growth, the roundup damaged new growth will be red too.
