Time to resurface pool plaster?

I hope someone can answer my questions. I have a swimming pool with black colored plaster. It was installed about 6 years ago. The black color is scratching of really easy. You can see the brush marks when you clean it etc. There appears to only be a thin layer of black color on top of white plaster.

I'm wondering if it is only a thin color coat on top of the plaster and it is only cosmetic or if that means the plaster is failing and needs to be redone? I would hope the plaster wouldn't fail after only 6 years. :(

We had our gunite pool resurfaced 5 years ago using 3M quartz crystals in the mix. The crystals are supposed to increase the durability of the plaster and added only $1,500 to the base price. We opted for the Caribbean Blue crystal mix in a medium grey plaster. The grey plaster gives a deeper blue color to the water which we really like. The only luck I've ever had with these finishes was to smack it with acid and dropping the PH bigtime. Then brush brush brush, in a little it'll time come around. Then keep your PH on the low side of mid 7's and ALK at 100 (+-20) and don't let CH go over 300. Schmackmaster is correct, don't trust the samples to gauge your pool finish by. Don't give up on your finish and don't expect anything more from your builder than the drain, acid wash, and diamond buff. Most importantly, you can't determine your pool finish with the pool lights at night. See ya, Kelly

These are trowel marks and they will come out over time. The colored plasters, i.e., grays, blacks, dark greens, tend to have color variations that's unavoidable. White based plasters have less color variations.

1/2" to 3/4" is the norm. Some areas may be 1". Plaster is not a structural material like concrete. Anything beyond 1" you may have issues cracking. Having 1" thickness for "touch up" is a new one to me.
