Question about rock over mulch
Comments (6)Since the wood chips are sitting on top of an old weed mat, they will not add much to the soil below. But that is a good thing since you don't want to enrich the soil - it only grows weeds. The landscaper was lazy. Instead of cleaning the site first, he just added more stuff to a problem. Now that it is done I would leave it as is. The wood will break down over time. Since you have stone on a weed mat, you will eventually need to remove the whole thing anyway. Weeds will continue to grow between the stones. Unless they used a lot of stones (ie thick layer, say 3" +), you will start to see the weed mat where the stones move and will hate seeing it. So you'll remove it....See Morebrown rubber mulch??
Comments (61)^^ Yikes LOL Turns out their is actually a tire ingredient that is now known to actually cause environmental harm, which is the first one I've heard of. All the other warnings in this thread were based on hearsay and "if it's there, it's toxic" which is not exactly the case. 6PPD is added to tires as a preservative for the rubber. Specifically, it reacts with ozone, preventing the ozone from damaging the rubber itself. Unfortunately, the product of that reaction - 6PPD quinone - is leachable and also quite toxic to salmon (and possibly other aquatic critters). Researchers knew for years that something was killing salmon during the mating run in certain streams in the PNW. They have finally pinned down this chemical as a major culprit. After a rain, it washes off the roads into the streams. Of course ozone is required for this to happen, so it is much more likely in urban areas with higher levels of ozone. Anyway it's another reason not to use tire mulch. As an environmental chemist, I was not that concerned with toxicity of other tire ingredients up to this point, but with this stuff, if you live near urban waterways especially, it might be best not to use it. https://cen.acs.org/environment/pollution/Tire-derived-chemical-kills-salmon/98/web/2020/12...See MoreLawn vacuum that will remove mulch from rock?
Comments (3)Shouldn't be a problem if the area is small enough to use an electric leaf blower/vacuum combination unit AND the mulch doesn't contain large pieces of wood. Most have at least two speeds so it can be cranked down to pick up the light stuff without catching large wood pieces or stone. We've used a base-level Craftsman unit (May not work if the mulch includes small branches or large chips of wood or bark because they could jam the suction fan, but any small or soft stuff should be fine....See MoreNeed design help, replacing rock mulch and plants
Comments (33)If the tree is healthy, it will grow normally, and the growth will be primarily upward, since that's what trees do. With healthy plants, a universal result of pruning is growth returned elsewhere. It is usually in the 50%+ range of the amount that has been removed. Naturally, because of the vast range of plant varieties and local conditions, there is no possible way to predict anyone's exact result. One must act on what is reasonable for the situation one has. One of my little trees with foliage to the ground, was 6' height at the beginning of last year. We had rain and I watered and fertilized it. At the end of the year is was 12' height. This spring, I removed EVERY SINGLE LIMB that existed the previous spring, leaving only what had grown during the latter part of last year. I was limbing it up to half its height in order to stimulate more growth on top, and to allow more light to reach the groundcover growing below it....See Morewobur
