What (Currently) Would You Name As The Three Most Beautiful Roses
Comments (88)WOW! What beautiful pictures! Thanks everybody for sharing them. I was caught up in the fun of this, thinking of what rose flower I liked best, when I had a thought - most of the responses and pictures here focus on the beauty of the individual blooms. This is understandable, but it is also how 20th century hybridizers thought, and unfortunately it resulted in the development of: spindly upright ugly bushes; new roses with no fragrance whatever; & roses so disease prone that everybody had to spray poisons all over their gardens every 2 weeks! So, I would prefer a different definition of "beauty" - roses that are beautiful not only in their individual blossoms, but as an overall bush. Banksia lutea, as it bursts into bloom all over town, suddenly appearing all over large trees, and dripping down from on high, would certainly be my favorite. All of the teas are graceful shrubs if you have enough room for them, and also have gorgeous flowers. MAC is beautiful in my garden because it has climbed up several old plum & fig trees, and I can see blossoms from my bedroom window as I speak, seemingly floating all over the top of our fruit tree forrest. This has been going on non-stop since March! Ditto Cl Peace, which is now producing blossoms all over the top of a huge pomegranite bush - its third bloom flush so far this year. I have a dark red/purple many many petaled mystery rose that I found in our garden (from where it was growing inside of a Japanese quince bush, I would say it was planted at least in the 1930s) which I rooted & planted out by the street in the sun, right next to the sidewalk. It blooms for 10 months of the year, and is amazingly fragrant with that heady "old rose" fragrance. Our street is a busy street, as is the sidewalk. This rose is only about 4-5 feet tall, so the blossoms are very accessible to passer- byes who want to smell it. I enjoy watching people's reactions when I am near there weeding or whatever - it is truly a "beautiful" rose, as it startles people into a brief happiness! Comments (53)Picking 3 is darn near impossible. Anyway, here are 3 that come to mind instantly. Lady of the Dawn I've been growing this beautiful Floribunda since 1989. Big bush, beautiful blooms. BOOM! I'm hooked. Louise Estes I started growing this beautiful HT since the late 1990's. For me this HT has it all. Vigorous growth, great foliage, great cutting stems, beautiful blooms with a nice clean scent. Ring of Fire This beautiful HT is a fairly new entry into the rose world. Just like Louise Estes, it has the whole package. Bush, foliage, stems, blooms and scent....See MoreThe most beautiful rose in the world
Comments (63)And I would have to add that "The Most Beautiful Rose" title belongs to more than one rose . . . Because as with Real Estate, roses and other growing things are dependent upon "LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION." So, while I truly believe that 'Evelyn' is The Most Beautiful Rose in Patrick's 6B conditions, and (per the late Col Mel Hulse) 'Souvenir de la Malmaison' is The Most Beautiful Rose in San Jose, CA's 9B conditions . . . NEITHER is beautiful here, in my Sunset Zone 23 garden, SdlM mildews so badly, no bloom opens. And Evelyn? She's so happy that she has to grow to between 12 and 14 ft. before she deigns to set a bloom. So, what IS The Most Beautiful Rose in my garden? Danged if I know. I guess, what ever's blooming today? This was 'Golden Celebration' last night, however . . ....See MoreYour Most Beautiful Rose and Annual, Plant, Perennial Pairing
Comments (17)It was a real adjustment going from east coast to west coast on this front. I was very fond of astrantias and hardy geraniums back there. Now, my favorite companions are centered on what can take the dry heat and intense sun, along with having a long bloom period, and is on the "spikey" side, or at least has a different texture, to contrast with the roses. Tall nicotianas (my favorites with roses are 'Lime Green' -- Melissa's acid green yellow, for sure-- and an accidental hybrid between 'Lime Green' and white N. alata that is pale green and so scented it wafts all over in evening). Agastaches ("Nectar" series a little more manageable and lots of colors, though as Rosefolly points out, can be obnoxious). Penstemon pinifolius: orange, short, tidy, tough. Aster x frikartii 'Monch': I was shocked this works as well here as it does -- year in, year out, heat tolerant, very easy on the water bill, blooms for like forever. Salvia 'May Night', ditto. Hardy geraniums are mostly not heat-tolerant enough, except Geranium harveyi (odd one from S. Africa) and 'Brookside'. A bunch of species oreganos, teucriums, and saturejas as drought-proof edges. Tea 'Le Pactole' this morning heading into a big flush (I expect her to eat her companions in a few short years) Also this morning, other side of the path (Penstemon pinifolius is on lower right):...See Morecanadian_rose
