Rose suggestions for HOT sun against brick wall

Hi - I think for the first time I am going to do a mass planting of the same variety. I am going to plant 6 of the same rose along a brick wall of my house that gets about 8+ hours of hot Dallas sun that easily gets into the 100's. I know the brick adds to the heat.
Color doesn't really matter, I am hoping for rebloom and fragrance, but most of all am looking for full shrub like growth. No leggy roses this time. Any suggestions? I already have Mutabilis against this brick wall and has looked great for 5 years. Irrigation is not a problem, there are shrub sprinklers against this wall.

You are right that no leggy rose can handle this. We have lost a number of roses against our south-facing retaining walls -- and our temps never approach your temps. Truthfully, the biggest success story is 'Louis Philippe'. Big, bushy, and always in bloom.

Why not more 'Mutablilis'? Just stick cuttings in the ground, they will likely root. An easier rooter I've not found.

Apologies, Hoov. I'm afraid the word "ivy" is enough to make me flinch. Growing, we thought we had killed the stuff several times. It always came back. At last -- because it really was causing structural problems here, we resorted to a chemical designed specifically for the purpose of killing ivy. (No, I don't like chemicals, but it WAS beginning to rip apart a fairly important and very old retaining wall.) The chemical did the trick. The stuff is gone. And to our very great pleasure, the Baronne Prevost we thought it had finally killed actually came back. We could call her "Lazarus," I guess. ============= We DID place large uprights at intervals along the wall, and nail redwood latticework panels to them. This has modified the effect of the reflected heat, and really helped the things planted there. Jeri

Suggestions for planting against West facing wall

Hi Matt, The front of my house also faces the west and it can get toasty in the afternoon by 3-4pm in the summer, but I have grown a variety of plants there. The plants you selected will do well. Also a dwarf lemon, avocado, or citrus tree would do nice there too. They stay green year round, can be pruned to a nice shape, and are tough plants. Also, the warmth from the wall when the sun hits will keep the plants warm during the winter. I have grown mums, hibiscus, princess daisy, hollyhocks, marigolds, geraniums, dianthus, vincas, gazanias, and just about everything else. Plants I would avoid are impatients and anything labeled "shade". Partial shade plants will do okay too provided temperatues do not get too hot. Here in Sacramento we are in the 90's to 100's by late afternoon so "partial shade" really means shade to me. The wall in your yard is a nice space to work with. I can see hibiscus, a few citrus trees, and some perennials work well there. The maintenance would be minimal other than water, minor weeding, fertilizer, and some trimming and you would not have to replant twice a year as with annuals. Stephanie

The boards on that fence look suspiciously like green wood to me, unless they have been protected with something. A fence like that wouldn't last long in western Ks, not with our wind. Also I can't tell if they are wood posts or covered with wood. At least you got the pretty side. I have a new shadow fence on the south side of my yard, 6 ft is our limit, but since every yard on this block drops a foot, it is really 7 feet. The reason for this fence is I'm trying to block out all the soccor balls that find their way into my yard. What a nuisance, last year I lost a lot of my vege plants, and have a broken tree peony, a flying soccor ball can do a lot of damage, and now another pest has invaded. I think every child around me got a drone for Christmas, Of course they don't know how to control them, so I'm constantly having to fish one out of shrubs ect. This is going to be a whole new way to garden along this fence. I've been watching the shadow line for a month now, and trying to figure how much sun I will have, of course it will be ever changing as the season progresses. I'm hoping I can plant daylilys and clematis this spring, I need to break up this 100 foot of new thats staring at me. half of the 100 feet will be in my vege garden. I'm afraid I've built myself a gardening nightmare. Help!

Hoovb -- I love Mutabilis, but it may be a bit too "open" for that situation. Having lost several roses to cane-burn, we selected 'Louis Phillipe' for one of those spots, simply because it was heavily-foliaged. That has succeeded so well that the bush is a monster. It LOVES it there.

We have succeeded with "Grandmother's Hat" in another area, by placing old latticework panels behind the plant, which moderated the bounced-back heat. BUT our climate is a LOT LOT cooler than any location I can think of in a Texas summer.

thanks Hoov and Jeri. Jeri did you notice much fragrance in the heat with LP? HMF says its mild to strong.

Sorry -- I am fragrance-challenged. I've never been able to smell L.P. -- my fault, not that of the rose.

What about a temporary panel to cover the wall until the rose builds up. Or maybe a structure that provides light shade until the bush is larger. Once it's nice and big, the structure could be taken down. Might look out of place for a while, but the years of beautiful rose to follow would be worth it.
