Prettiest ground cover around roses?
Comments (26)Oops I spelled it wrong above. It's really Osteospermum -- otherwise known as "freeway daisies" in these parts because they require so little care. When they do get the same care as roses -- fertilizer and water -- they bloom year round. And the white ones stay low and make a solid carpet of white -- much prettier in mass than as single plants -- but easy to grow from cuttings. The purple ones however, are climbers and you have to keep untangling them from the plants above them to keep them low. So, white is best. Haven't tried the other colors. Comments (28)Gorgeous reds!!!! I have very few. I got rid of Mr. Lincoln and Oklahoma for being stingy. I have Velvet Fragrance and Alec's Red. I want them to grow taller, but so far they're staying short. Velvet Fragrance has an incredible fragrance!!! Nummykitchen - those roses are beyond beautiful!!! Wow!!! Such great pictures too!! Dan - love the color on your Olympiad!! Fragrancenutter - Striped Intuition must be fabulous for you to keep a scentless rose. I don't want to get it because of the lack of fragrance. But.... Sara-Ann - looks lovely and ruffled. :) Alec's Red - a shortie for me....See Moremoving a rose - how early is too early (zone 6)?
Comments (8)Frances, Too early is when the ground is still solidly frozen. You'll break your back and shovel both then. The second time, is when It is too early in the AM, as before sunrise, when the street lights are still on. In the dark you will need someone to hold your lantern or flashlight, and any early rising or shift working neighbors who might see you, could call the cops. All kidding aside, this is the ideal time to move roses, when they are dormant. Get your new location hole dug first. Then dig your rose, getting as much soil ball as you can. Do it carefully, and your rose in its new home will wake up like nothing happened, not skipping a beat. Treat it like any freshly planted rose bush. Backfill with light, fluffy soil and water in generously. You cannot fail. Moses...See MorePrettiest rose bush in your garden?
Comments (20)111plisa - I need to get another photo of Savannah, that is just starting to open blooms the last couple of days. I'd have to say of the 3 roses I purchased last year, this one is my favorite. I know the color is really iridescent and hard to describe or see in a photo, and that's the main reason, but I haven't figured out yet why I like it more than the others. [g] I still think I probably haven't lived with any of these roses long enough to have a final verdict. Definitely will keep them through next season and start looking for something more graceful to add as well. I'll take a look at the others you mentioned. Thank you!...See MoreRelated Professionals
