New Thoughts about Coppicing
Comments (4)i have always felt glad that you post where i often read you, and again, you have helped remind/educate me about the old wood/new wood thing - which i DO have trouble learning- no matter how MANY times I have read it in the last 20 years!! so thank you for your note. but when i think about cutting back the long-awaited handsome foliage/shape of those glorious catalpa and cotinus, i just don't think i can do it!! i do, however, think i will follow your suggestion with the physocarpus on the hillside, where it is not such a focal point!! so, thank you, saypoint, for your valuable advice. best, mindy p.s. WHEN are you coming up to visit?!we're just 15 min. no. of boston. www.cottonarboretum.blogspot.com...See MoreNinebark vs Smokebush
Comments (13)I have 2 Diablo Ninebarks. Deer are regular visitors to my yard and snack on a lot of my plantings, but have never bothered the Ninebark. However last year, powdery mildew became a problem with them. One Ninebark is situated in perhaps a less than ideal place where airflow, or more correctly, lack of it and just 4 to 5 hours of full sun might be the problem. I cut it back severly this year to try to get a handle on the mildew. The other Ninebark is in a very breezy spot with full sun and good moisture, but is showing a few spots of mildew. Lucinda, all these above responses aren't helping you choose, I am sure. Sometimes you just have to jump in with both feet and "Go for it!" Good luck with whatever you choose!...See MoreFocal Point Shrub

Comments (28)Thank you, ckerr, for the advice. I’m checking with local nurseries. NHbabs, I thought of a physocarpus, but I think it would be wider than y’all, which is not what I need. I need a y’all, relatively narrow shrub. I‘ve been looking at the new dwarf ‘Winecraft Black,’ and I think it would be close to perfect for what I need. if I can find it local, that’s probable what I’ll do. thanks to everyone for the information and experiences! I appreciate learning from your wisdom....See Morev1rt
