Where to put Gloire des Rosomanes et al

Reds are the hardest colors for me to place in my garden. The reds currently in my pot ghetto are - Rosomanes, WS 2000, Archduke Charles, Old Master, Papageno, (ok, the lst 2 are floribundas, but I love them & the oolor certainly isn't scarlet)

So...does anyone think they work well together? I think Papageno may be the least likely candidate. I've got a tentative plan to intermix them w/ white roses & hopefully bypass some of the color compatability issues.

Please tell me that you think!

Mixing them with white roses seems like a good idea but I would also plant some other plants such as lavenders, sages or other perennials in lavender-blue and white colors to soften the colors and shapes of the roses. Roses by themselves often can be a bit boring and the companion plants will lends softness and other colors and shapes, in addition to attracting helpful insects and other wild creatures. It's a win-win situation for everyone.

I guess this is a matter of personal taste. I would never put red and white together: it's much too much like a national flag. Also red and cool pink side by side set my teeth on edge. I would put cherry red/purplish red alongside any kind of soft peach/apricot/pink-yellow blend/soft buttery or creamy yellow. Also fluorescent orange-pinks are surprisingly attractive, as long as there are pale roses nearby to soften the general effect. Perhaps this is color heresy, but these are the combinations that satisfy my eyes. Shades of lavender and grayed blues are always welcome with roses.

Baronne Prevost could probably be trained on a pillar but it is fiercely prickly - the big, pointed kinds - I would not want to be the one to tie it up! We have Mme Joseph Schwarz growing in almost total shade in the Sacramento cemetery where it stays clean and blooms. I'm pretty sure it's a sport of Duchesse de Brabant since it sometimes throws pink flowers, but it performs much better. DdB gets mildew here, too, although our summer heat discourages it so the mildew is spring and fall. I heard a European speaker (don't remember who) extoll Mme Joseph Schwatz's virtues as a much superior plant to DdB, and that's been my experience too. Some teas are big. Some are huge. Mrs. Dudley Cross is in that category. Mme Antoine Mari is the closest to a moderate-sized tea that I've encountered but even that is building in our garden. Anita

Last night was lime & chipoltle talapia with red skins and braised green beans. Tonight is grilled sirloin steak (with some kind of rub--haven't decided which one to use yet), baked potatoes, and spinach salad. Tomorrow is a pork sirloin roast in crockpot with apples & sauerkraut, onions, potatoes, & carrots. The last couple of weeks have included beef stew (in pressure cooker), pork green chile, ginger chicken stir fry, salmon, and beef & barley soup. DH just returned from a conference in New Orleans and brought me a signed copy of "Chef Paul Prudhomme's Louisiana Kitchen," so I'll be trying out some of those recipes soon. Chef Prudhomme catered the opening night reception and DH said the gumbo was the best he ever had. Oh, almost forgot, I don't make desserts very often, but I'm going to make a Wacky Cake tonight (only 3/4 c. sugar in it). Recipe is from my "America's Best Lost Recipes" cookbook. I've never tried the Wacky Cake before but it sounds good (essentially a chocolate snack cake).

I would done stabalized whipped cream. I recently cleaned out a freezer and found a partial container of Cool Whip that the date indicated had been there for years (even without the date, it would have had to have been at least 3 years old since I haven't hosted TG dinner the last two). When I opened it to dump out the contents, it looked like it probably did last time anyone looked at it -- which made me wonder about the stuff. I have heard of people having problems with the gelatin to stabalize whipped cream. . I think it is a matter of mixing in and dissolving evenly. KIng Arthur Flour also sells a Whipped Cream Stablizer that some folks find better to work with than gelatin. I think it is gelatin and sugar premixed in a fine powder for easier blending. I ordered some to try it and have only used it once. Worked well -- the leftover cream stayed fully whipped in my fridge until I tossed the remnants. Mentioning it in case you want to have it on hand for the future. Hope you tried the chocolate curls and got them to work too. They always look great and dress up anything, but your crunched up candy would do that too.

I put any colors together. My choice usually depends on two factors: what roses do I have in my driveway that need to be planted, and where do I have a spot that is right for the ultimate size/shape of the rose. Color is a very minor consideration.

I have been trying a few "calculated" combinatons, however. For example, I've planted Tausendschon and Ghislaine de Feligonde together. I've been told this is a remarkable combination. I've also put Ghislaine de Feligonde with Climbing Pinkie on a stretch of wrought iron fence. I also put Black Prince with Gardenia which I think turned out beautifully.

Currently, I am considering adding Crepuscule to Alexandre Girault to extend the bloom period of a high focus area on a rather large "bare" brick wall. Alexandre Girault will provide a wonderful glossy green (healthy) backdrop, and I think Crepuscule will add significant color from a distance.

I don't love red. ARchduke Charles fits in anywhere because the blooms are often two-toned, and it doesn't run to scarlet. I have it right next to Lavender Dream, and it looks fine. It will fine with any pinks, mauves or whites. I've banished Glore des Rosomanes, which is a fabulous rose here, out to an area where it can be with two ginormous Linda Campbells. Both are terrific, neither is scarlet, which wins them a reprieve.

I DO love red, and I also love red and pink together. Happens in nature, after all.

And I would love to stagger Ragged Robin with Grandmother's Hat in an informal hedge.
