Companions for Harrison Yellow Rose

I want to plant Harrisson Yellow in my yard and was wondering what other plants, both perennials or shrubs or climbers would look good with it. I plan to plant it next to a large lilac Andencken an Ludwig Spaeth, hoping that they bloom at around the same time. What about tall bearded iris in blue, purple, or pink? Also, for latest in the season I thought in could train a clematis that is not too vigorous through the shrub and give it a second life... What do you think? Those of you who have this rose what do you combine it with? Any ideas or suggestions will be very welcome.

Harison's Yellow is a very awkward, gangly looking shrub until it gets big. It gets big by spreading out and colonizing new territory. For that reason, almost all the ones I've ever seen are planted as islands in the middle of lawn. The spread gets controlled by the lawnmower. It should work reasonably well with the lilac, and I wouldn't worry about it vs. a clematis, though I would probably wait a couple of years to let it get established first. Most anything else will just get overrun.

Rosa hugonis or Rosa primula are better behaved plants that are more likely to bloom with the S. vulgaris cultivars. At least they do here. Harison's Yellow is well in the second wave of roses, and tends to bloom with the rugosas.

Thank you mad_gallica for your response. That's exactly what I wanted to find out. Btw, I like how you described Harrison Yellow as blooming "in the second" wave. It describes it perfect;y.

It sounds like the wrong plant in the wrong place. Harison's Yellow is at its best given a lot of space to spread out and make a good clump. It's nature is to be leggy and spread out, and mass makes it look better. It is extremely unlikely that you will kill it by hard pruning. However, it won't bloom next year.

I can't believe it! It has a bloom! And a bunch more very close to blooming. The rest of my roses are just getting good leaves out on most and some dont even have that yet. Now while we were out looking at the roses, front and back ones both, we noticed something odd. The ones in the back smell heavenly. More so than ever before. But there are no roses out yet on those bushes. The scent is very sweet and heavenly. Nothing nippy about it at all. We checked the front ones and a few branches had scent but mostly none at all. (We can't smell the bloom. It's way up on top) Whats going on with this anyway? lol. oh and thanks stefanb for identifying the rose for me. :D

I don't think Harison's Yellow will like being cut down. It will be a set back but I doubt it will kill him.
