Liz,
I am new on this forum, but I have a lot of roses and most of them are old roses. I'm a regular over in the Cottage Garden Forum, and what's a Cottage Garden without roses? So, I thought I would start visiting here, and boy am I glad I did!
That video was just what I needed to see.

Thank you for all your kind comments, but I can tell you, it has everything to do with the plant and not the planter. I took a small branch from AP one spring and stuck it in the ground about 15-20 feet away from an oak tree. During rainy nights that winter, my "sensor" lights would come on and I could see through the wind and rain that young AP rooting which was now about 20 feet swinging toward that tree as I sat wondering when the rains and thunder would cease but AP was not giving up. It only gave up the following spring when I dug it up and gave it to my DIL for a tree where she wanted that rose to grow. Five years later it is all up in her oak tree.

That's a wonderful video. For Compassion, it's prerry easy. The canes are stiff and not very flexible. My plants are also rather bushy. You'll have to train each basal as it emerges because they'll get stiff fast. I have is 3 cross bars in my pillar set starting at 24 inches from the ground, every 16 or 18 inches apart. I lodge the canes against and around them and tie them annually with twine. Have your husband buy, depending on how much you want to spend, 1 inch copper pipe which you cut into 28 - 30 inch lengths (eyeball the proportion), or 1 inch galvanized pipe which you can spray with the Professional Quality Rustoleum in the color of your choice (I like bronze). You will drill through that pillar horizontally about every 15 or 18 inches, at 90 degrees from one another. I'm pretty sure we sealed those holes after the pipe was pounded in. I'll look for a pix of my Compassion pillar and post it.

I'm also a believer in digging a hole big enough to plant the rose without cramping but not much bigger than that. So if you have a large field grown bareroot plant that's 2 1/2 years old when you get it then I completely agree with digging a big enough hole to get it in without chopping roots or cramming it in. Ditto for a container rose in a 5 or even 10 gallon container. For bands up to two gallon IMO the hole I show in the video is enough however. I want them to get into the native soil as fast as possible. Keep in mind this video is about buying and planting band and liner roses. What I was basically saying is I don't want to disturb the existing, living soil around what is needed to get the rose properly in the ground. I feel that soil has spent years building up its living profile and by digging a huge hole and back-filling with potting soil or whatever you can do more harm than good. Hence my de-emphasis on the 2' x 2' hole. That's also why I advocate a 50/50 mix of native soil and living non sterilized amendment and then leaving the soil around it alone. For me it works and has for years. Regarding root system and plant growth. Having planted thousands of roses from bands to pots to bareroot on at least 5 different kinds of root systems (own-root, huey, multiflora, canina and laxa) and having raised tens of thousands of roses as field grown crops both budded (multiflora) and own-root, in my experience I'm hard pressed to see the difference between any good garden rose after two to three years in the ground no matter how it got started. Thanks for the link. Loved the video as well as "How to prune a rose with structure" also shown there. Perfect for tea and chinas, if and when mine get to that size.

I have a lot of climbers because my thinking is with a small yard I can go UP and get more roses in the space.

Excellent video; thank you for the link. Paul Zimmerman gave a clear explanation and demonstration.

I watched several of the videos he made. A rose grower looking for information on pruning could do an awful lot worse. I very much liked his differentiation of roses that send up new canes from the ground from those which build structure slowly. It was many years before I for one really understood that difference.

I also found the one on pruning the Asiatic roses (teas, chinas, etc.) very interesting. I've never lived where they were all that easy to grow so I've never tried to. I knew the pruning for them was different, but I'd never seen it done, and I'm one of those who loves to ask & watch someone before I read (although I'll read before I do it if I have no one to ask). Watching that was very interesting and informative.

I wonder whether he cuts back New Dawn laterals that way (as he implies in the pillar video)? I seem to recall that New Dawn's later flowers come from someplace unusually close to the first ones?
