Newbie -- looking for variety to plant under Maple tree
Comments (5)Hi Julie...You're in the bay area so a nice marine influence for pleasing azaleas? Here conditions are perfect for azaleas and rhododendrons, so they have no other problems to contend with other than a little root competition. My maple could be smaller than yours, it's Orido Nishiki and aprox 12 x 10', maybe a little smaller. I waste no space - have none to waste. The maple has billardiera longiflora (tiny leafed evergreen vine) growing through it, azalea, maidenhair fern, dwarf solomon's seal, cimicifuga brunette and hellebores under it. I do mulch with compost every spring, fertilize nothing, and have a drip hose wound throughout to keep all happy. Dig around a little and see if you have planting pockets without too many roots in your way, you'll know if azaleas will work for you there. The also evergreen oriental hybrid hellebores are thriving under my maple too...you can't be locked indoors in your climate in winter either and might enjoy those for the winter flowering interest - my gray damp winters need it. Comments (44)Docmom, I have sent you some messages via Houzz messaging system. I assume you have not received them? I am going to try again. If you don’t get anything, please see if you have emails enabled. Thanks! To see your messages while on Houzz (rather than / or in addition to email) go to the upper right corner. Click on "your Houzz". In the drop down menu, click "your Ideabooks". On a header on that page, you will see "Messages". Click on that and you will see any messages in your Inbox. There's a menu at left for Sent messages and Received messages. It took me a while to find this! ;)...See Moreplants for under maple tree (post your pictures)
Comments (0)Hello! Maureen inspired me with her post about planting under the sugar maple. Anyone want to post pictures of their current plantings under their shallow rooted maple trees? Or are you lucky enough to not have these beasts growing in your yard? I have 3 maples in my yard, none of them planted around (yet). I'd love to get some picture inspiration... I have heard about some of the perennials that do well in this location but pictures are always more fun to look at....See MoreNever plant hosta under a maple tree
Comments (27)I had success for about 10 years under a huge old silver maple, then, the hostas just started to diminish for no apparent reason....maybe the maple roots got into the bed, because I do remember digging out the hostas and there were maple roots in them. Changed the whole dang garden over to geranium macrorhizzum...which works great under a maple, btw.... 3-4 years later, the maples came down. Now I COULD have hostas, but my sunburst honeylocust doesn't actually provide that much shade, so I pretty much plant for sun. I do think it's very important to try things out (if you have have the time and can afford it)...what works for one person, might not work for the next, and vice versa....See Morehunt4carl
