Solar heat, anyone?

Greetings all. Am thinking ahead 1 year to when my pond will be completed and my fish facing their first winter outdoors.

I keep thinking "why not solar heat"? After all some forms of passive solar heat make use of water heated by the sun. IÂm sure here in zone 5b I would still need to have a deicer on hand  but still, the less ice that builds up, the better.

Here are a couple of things I found searching on "solar pond heater":

Pond/pool covers http://www.koicarp.net/electrical_heating/solar_blanket.html

Solar powered aerator http://www.solaraerator.com/?gclid=CNHH8OO_lpACFQwsOAodsHgY8g

Im thinking at the very least IÂd put on some sort of pond cover. Because we have snow here, IÂm thinking it would have to be something more tent-like with sloping sides--otherwise the pond would be buried and the oxygen cut off.

If anyone has any experience with these products or other ideas/ links to share, or wants to get into the spirit of brainstormingÂplease post here! How can we make use of sun power?
