Roses to give away in NYC

I have a few roses that need new homes. I'm in a Brooklyn Brownstone and the roses are much bigger than they were supposed to be. It's not such a big deal - I still have about 44 in a small garden, but these have simply outgrown their homes. They are all own-root.

Vineyard Song - it's a fairly recent introduction by Ralph Moore, Meant to be in the lavender color family, it's actually more of a cool pink that blooms in tight clusters of small but very fluffy flowers, somewhat like grape clusters. It sprawls a bit, forming a mounding plant about three or four feet in all directions. Not too thorny but it is a rose after all.

Dixieland Linda - it's a sport of the better known Aloha, which is a fairly large multi-petaled pink rose. David Austin used Aloha to breed many of his English roses - big, fluffy, fragrant roses. Dixieland Linda is identical to Aloha in all respects except the blooms have a slightly orange hue rather than being pure pink. Quite fragrant. Some people use it as a small climbing rose but is really a large shrub rose.

Pleasantrie - this is pretty much unknown. It was bred by a Hungarian breeder from what is thought to be one of the world's oldest roses - Mutabilis, also known as the butterfly rose. A single. Blooms start out yellow but the sun turns them pink and you have several colors of bloom on the rose at once. In the spring it is covered with blooms. This rose is very similar to Mutabilis and I can't really tell the difference. It's supposed to be a bit brighter in coloring, but you'd have to see them side by side to notice. This rose was supposed to be a large shrub, like the one above, but it grows into a monster climber. If you have a wall or fence you want covered, plant it there. I had no idea it would be so big.

Braveheart - from Heirloom Roses. A medium sized shrub that has big fragrant very dark red blooms. I gave it to someone a few years ago but apparently didn't get all of the roots because I have it again. It's actually quite beautiful, but not in a good place.

Something I rooted and forgot. I think it's going to be Awakening, which is a pink climber, but I can't remember what it was. It's small now but if that is what it turns into, it's going to be big.

I may get rid of Phyllis Bide too. It's just too crowded in that corner now.

Hi there, I'm close to running out of space in my Brooklyn Brownstone garden too, but I think I can squeeze a few more in : ) Do you know if Pleasantrie does well in filtered sun/partial shade the way its parent Mutabilis does? I'm interested in that one and Braveheart. And perhaps Vineyard Song too, if you don't have any other takers. I have Sweet Chariot and I think the two are very similar, but if you don't find a home for it I could use it as a container rose.

Hi Roses in NY, I'll be happy to pick them up. I live just over the GW in Jersey(2 miles from the bridge) and will be in the city next week. I just dug up this three year old plant last Friday 1/17 and put it with its loamy soil in a 5 gallon container. Want to give it to a new home immediately for its best chance. It was too humid and cool in Berkeley, California for this rose to thrive. It got powdery mildew. Just didn't produce enough. It also just stayed in bud form and didn't fully open. Recommend it for a climate with warmer and drier summers. Other parts of the Bay Area such as Santa Rosa, Walnut Creek, and San Jose should be warm and dry enough for this rose. Sent a note. BTW - it's not a great idea to cut all roses down every few years. Some are hardy, some far less so. We're in a rather marginal area for things like Noisettes and teas, which can be fragile. If you cut down too much, the plant may not recover. Many rosarians recommend not cutting those at all, but I've found that some can be trimmed with no damage. Some of the hybrid teas too, although most of them really need to be cut or they're not very useful in the garden. The gallicas and some of the other shrub roses, particularly things like the Bucks and Morden roses, can take a good whacking. As to keeping them to the size you want - possible but not really practical in this case. One of them just wants to be 13 feet tall and I'm turning into Paul Bunyan trying to trim it. Way easier to find some that have natural height preferences for this climate! I have about 50 roses of various sizes so if you have any preferences, I can root whatever you'd like and they'll probably be OK to transplant by fall. Only problem is that I pruned them last month so you can't tell what size they'll get, although you'll get an idea. I can give you some tips on growing and planting them when you come by. And YES! There's other stuff to give away too - things just multiply all over the place. I'm sure we can find some columbines, some bleeding heart, some creeping phlox, some sundrops, some baby black currant bushes if you want, some coriopsis, irises, etc.

Cripes do I ever hate Yahoo mail. After deleting the spam, the porn, the Nigerian scams, the other nonsense, if I left any of the messages that should have gotten thru I'm always happy. Anyhow, I sent a response to the two who wrote and a better e-mail address. I think some of the e-mails didn't go thru for whatever reason. Do you mind re-sending them?

This week is pretty hectic but the weekend or next week would work. The sooner the better if you want blooms this spring.

I'm happy to give these away even tho I like them a lot. They're just too big for my space. The only one that actually grew to the size I thought it would was Dixieland Linda but I have so many other pink roses that I'll part with it. I can put James Galway there and it's got almost no thorns, so I'm happier with it.

Did some more pruning this weekend. If you take Pleasantrie, which is quite nice, I hope you have a big space.
