In regards to your question. Truth be told I have never grown New Dawn in an environment where I need to keep it controlled. We grow it at the nursery but we take cuttings during the season for rooting because it sells like crazy for us.

That being said there is a long fence line of old New Dawn plants near here that are left completely alone all year. The spring display is breathtaking and then there is little beyond that except for some fall bloom. So I'm not sure leaving it along brings the best re-bloom.

The plants we cut on all year don't rebloom much but then again we don't "groom" for rebloom.

So my answer is - I'm not sure but now I want to know. Any others care to chime in with their New Dawn experiences!

I have a New Dawn that I leave alone but the deer don't. They stroll past it, nibbling as they go. Since the deer prefer hybrid teas, bourbons, and tomato plants, they just prune New Dawn's most accessible branches. I haven't noticed any difference in the re-blooms.

We have a line of them over a brick wall. Some years we manage to do a decent job of keeping them deadheaded. Other years there is just too many other things going on. There is a major difference in rebloom depending on how much deadheading we do. The more deadheading, the much better the repeat.

Mad gallica. When you deadhead do you take off just behind the bloom or take the laterals back aka a light summer haircut?

They are usually taken back to the first leaves. Given the size of some of the clusters, it can turn into a fair amount of pruning. However, it isn't done to control size.

york, I've read the same things about New Dawn that you are speaking of, that it should be deadheaded very close to the flower heads. I've also read that it blooms on both old and new wood and the further down you cut the longer it takes to rebloom.

I have a ND growing up my deck and I've tried dh'ing it both ways. It seems to me that the rebloom is much slower or non existent if the cut is made closer to the cane rather than very close or right under the flower head.

One of the places I have read to cut behind the flower is in Stephen Scanniello's book in climbing roses, p. 138:

"Most everblooming climbers should be pruned during the growing season, just after the first flowering, when their laterals are cut back by two thirds to encourage good rebloom. Treat 'New Dawn' and its progeny differently from other climbers, however. The new buds on these roses develop immediately behind the fading flowers, and you may destroy them if you cut the laterals ack to far. Therefore, simply pinch off the spent flowers, leaving as much of the lateral as possible. If you do this throughout the summer, you will have a profuse display of blooms all season long."

Cass/berndoodle has said the same thing in at least one thread I've read here.

I started thinking about ND right after I saw your climbing rose video, so I was glad to see the ? asked.

I really have enjoyed seeing the pruning shows too. The one that was esp helpful was the one pointing out how some roses grow from the base and others branch, like the teas. Thanks so much.
