Anyone Growing 'Our Lady of Guadalupe' in the deep south?
Comments (7)cvfal, I am growing three 'Our Lady of Guadalupe' roses in San Diego, Southern California and they are in the ground for a few years now. I have nothing but good things to say about them. They repeat quickly, do very well in the heat of summer here and I love the perfect flower form and the silvery-pink color. Usually this rose is very healthy, but when certain weather conditions occur it gets a hint of powdery mildew as do almost all of my roses (I garden organically and don't spray), but in general it is an easy to grow no fuss rose in my yard. It is truly a special rose for me and that I have three of them in my small garden says it all. My climate is probably much more dry than yours so my experience may not be completely valid for your garden zone, but I would say that this rose is so pretty that it is worth that you give it a try! Comments (5)Wow, Kate - that just goes to show how much of a difference one state and zone's difference can make! Just north of you in Nebraska, I was shocked to see some very tight buds already forming on the early bloomers in my yard (Reine des Violette and Felix Leclerc usually vie for first place), but absolutely nothing rose-related is blooming. In fact, I still have tulips going strong and just fading in the warmer areas of the yard. This has been a weird weather year, and everything seems to be compressing into May that is normally stretched out over 2 months. In the meantime, I'm sure your garden club will be suitably amazed and impressed at your yard, even if they don't see it in its full glory. Our role as rose enthusiasts is to always see beyond the present situation to what could be grown, but you will most definitely demonstrate how very well you can grow 70 roses in your most capable hands. We of course welcome pictures. Cynthia...See MoreOur Lady of Guadalupe
Comments (8)Since Our Lady is in almost constant bloom once she gets going, the early freezes we've had in the fall have hit her fairly hard. Added to that, mine has been susceptible to canker and is not particularly cane hardy. The result is that for the last 4 years after spring pruning I'm lucky if she's a foot and 1/2 tall. So far she has rebounded to about double that height or a little more by fall, only to have the cycle repeat. Since mine is a J&P, I'm assuming it's Dr. Huey grafted. Where I have it situated it's low height actually works out well, and I like her so much that I think I'll replace her if she ever fails to show up in spring....See MoreOur Lady of Guadalupe
