Mme Antoine Mari vs Mme Caroline Testout vs Heritage
Comments (8)Mme. Antoine Mari" is one of my 12 favorite Tea roses, for beauty of blossom, leaf, and bush, and Tea is my favorite rose class. The new foliage is purplish and very attractive, and as with nearly all roses of this class re-bloom is quite fast, over an extended bloom season, until the first frost. There are c. 6 or so Tea roses that are slightly more tolerant to cold and M.A.M. is said to be one of them, from Bourbon influence, but I don't know if it can be grown in 6b. Mme. Caroline Testout' is a fine rose, one of the early H.T.s with broad blooms that resemble a Hybrid Perpetual more than most H.T.s. "Heritage" did not perform well in our organic method garden, it was covered with powdery mildew, and was slow to re-bloom, and the petals were damaged by rain. Of all the pink Austin roses, my favorite is "Mary Rose" for its fragrant pink roses, pretty foliage and more graceful cane growth habit. It was the only Austin rose among 14 different Austin roses that bloomed as early as our Tea roses in spring. "Mary Rose" also produced good re-bloom. - In our garden, near San Francisco, California "Mary Rose" bloomed as often as a Florabunda, producing between 3 and 4 bloom cycles each year. I hope my advice is of some help. Luxrosa...See MoreMme Caroline Testout - a good rose?
Comments (13)This is a fantastic rose. There was a 100 year old house in our neighborhood that had been totally neglected by its owners for 50 years, and had actually been vacant for the last 7 years. I knew there was an old pink rose in the back yard, because I had seen it over the fence one Spring. A nice couple bought the house and fixed it up, and the day their moving van came, what was unloaded out of the van, along with everything else, but about 75 roses in large pots! So, I went over and introduced myself. I told the lady a few days later that there was one old survivor rose in her back yard. She said there were NO roses in her back yard, except the ones she had brought. So, we walked back there, and there was a huge blackberry thicket on one side of the yard, out of which were peeking the most amazing huge pink roses! I helped her get rid of the blackberries, and low and behold there were TWO large bushes of Mme Caroline Testout, growing in shade to partial shade, and blooming their heads off! I now have a rooted cutting in my yard. It is growing up our house, on the South side, in mostly sun above 6 feet. Never gets any diseases, and is never sprayed, and only fed once a year....See MoreMme Caroline Testout, old HT rose?
Comments (5)Mme Caroline Testout is indeed an "old" HT introduced in 1890. It has a high rating in the American Rose Society Handbook BUT that doesn't really mean anything for Florida. For example Rogosas do very well up north and get a very high ratings. Not many people grow them in Florida so no reports make it into the rating system. OK...too much information and NOT the answer to your question. You might try the Antique rose forum if you haven't already....See MoreNormal bud for Mme Caroline Testout?
Comments (8)I just went out and looked at my MCT, which is finished blooming for the moment and is setting hips. Several of the hips still DID have sepals like that, although most did not. So, I would say it is normal. Old roses are can be variable in what their blooms do. Jackie...See Moreorganicgardendreams
