preatty evergreen hedge for privaci in zone 6, please?

Hello

I have a little back yard and a horrible chain link fence that divides my house from our neighbours so, my question is : What kind of hedge sould i plant ? I don't mind if grows tall and i would love to have someting that doesn't grow to wide (4 feet tops ) because i want to play with my children in the back yard, i read in some catalogs for shrubs that some get to 12 feet wide and that would take olmost all the space of my back yard. Something with nice smell? or preatty flowers? or interesting leafes? Thanks!!! :)

Manhattan euonymus (E. kiatschovicus 'Manhattan') gets 5-6+' high, must be sheared but can be held to 3-4' wide or even narrower if you shear it often enough. Northern bayberry (Myrica pennsylvanica) gets much taller, can be sheared as a hedge to about any height and width but tends to get "leggy" at the bottom. A couple of options. Both are broadleaf evergreens. Bayberry foliage and berries are beautifully fragrant when crushed.

you have a chain link fence?
Grow an evergreen honeysuckle vine on it.
You can trim it whenever you want to keep it looking beautiful.
Go online to Brushwood nursery and check out his vines.
Honeysuckles will do the job quickly and efficiently.
And the kids will love it when it flowers and the hummingbirds come.
You could also grow japanese honeysuckle on that fence and it won't loose its leaves in the winter, (but you didn't hear it from me).

Deer tastes vary because the evergreen selections will expand from north to south. So that in colder zones, the selection is narrower and deer can't be finicky eaters. Blue Princess is relatively safe in Zone 7 and they never eat my Japanese holly, Inkberry, or Nellie Stevens! Cephalotaxus (plum yew) in my zone is supposed to be avoided by deer and is offered as a substitute for the true Yew (which they love), but they have at least trimmed the Plum Yew--maybe enough to realize that they don't like it--this winter it was untouched. Rhododendrons don't get touched by me, but are eaten in colder zones. I have a hedge of clumping, Fargesia bamboo (non-aggressive) that they never eat but don't think they grow in zone 5. What about boxwoods?--They hate boxwood, and Cherry Laurel, so too with Barberry--though I hate that one too! It really is trial and error though and learning about local deer tastes. Should not stop you from having a beautiful yard though. I know because I literally live in the deer crossing (an active one at that). Good luck!

Eastern Arbor Vitae have soft dark green foliage and are so named 'Vitae' as the tree of life as they reportedly live well over 100 years. They are low maintenance and can be sculpted. Plant a line of them side by side and you can literally create a green wall. And if you want, you can shape that wall in any number of ways, including putting in square windows ... ha ha. The denseness of the foliage does not appeal to some folks as they figure it can be a haven for spiders. But spray every now and then and you'll conquer the arachnids. And besides, you'll have them no matter what you plant. Bamboo is another plant that is good for privacy screening.

I thought Viburnum Odoratissimum would be a good idea as a fence line hedge. Planted a line of them to cover 120' front property line. They have been awful. Disease prone, all sorts of insect pest, and likely a lot of the problems has been caused by the long term drought. These things are not as drought tolerant as reported, not here. Not on this sand soil I have in southern Pinellas. In fact after looking around at where these things are used, due to how common they are and price they are a favorite at shopping centers and gov. buildings I an not unique with these pitiful things. All over they are sparse in growth with a ton of dead branches. Again I suspect this is because they are not getting enough water. I will never use this junk again. They have struggled for 8 yrs and only one of the 12 has done goodd. Aphids, thrips, scale, you name it they get it when they do grow like now. What I have found working very well though it must be trimmed is the small tree/shrub, the native wax myrtle. Incredible how it thrives wet or dry and when trimmed produces a thick bush shrub privacy effect. However left on its own without trimming it will get a bit more tree like and that is fine too. It will sucker some but comparing these two plants for my purpose hands down winner is the wax myrtle.

I have little to no personal experience with growing or eating most of these, but here are some plants to look at: Arbutus unedo. 'Compacta' gets to about 6' but the straight species is taller. Edible(?) fruit. Mahonia spp While the most common garden type I've seen is low-growing, there are others, perhaps less commonly found in commerce, that grow much taller. Edible fruit Clumping bamboo - Bamboos come in a range of sizes and hardiness, so you can most likely find one that works, but be sure to look only at clumping, not running bamboos which are difficult to contain. Edible shoots Many common needled evergreens can be used to make teas: spruce/Picea, hemlock/Tsuga, fir/Abies, and pine/Pinus. They are nutrient rich and so make sense as a survival food, but I honestly can't say that I've felt any inclination to try them. You might want to add information on where you are since 7b in the southeast US is quite different than 7b in the southwest US. For example, the taller Mahonia I've seen were growing in Utah, and I know that at one point at least one was offered by a New Mexico nursery, but I don't know if it would be happy in the SE US. Other growing info would be useful as well; is this for sun or shade or part sun? Are you willing to prune on a regular basis? Do you want evergreen for privacy or the winter green color? If for privacy, there are some densely twiggy deciduous large shrubs/small trees that might work for you such as hazel (edible nuts if you can beat the rodents to them) though they will need pruning.

You could grow Japanese honeysuckle if you wanted...and then a year later when you don't want to. And for the rest of your garden's life. It will probably survive with cockroaches if a nuclear bomb goes off in the yard. And your neighbors will love you when the birds poop out extremely viable seeds in their yards too. It's a very inappropriate suggestion for someone looking for gardening help, butterfly4u.

I recommend abelia. They're evergreen and come in a wide variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. Blooms in summer are a plus, and will attract butterflies. Some have fragrance as well. All grow wider than tall, and are very low maintenance and pest-free. A quick Google search will give you lots of pics to choose from.
