HFGH Glasing attachment?

I have heard that 3M Dual Lock may be an interesting option to screws and caulk to reinforce the poly panels. It is a velcro-like material with far greater adhesive ability. My HFGH is going up in the next couple of weeks and I may give this a try, any other experiences?

I think it's an interesting concept. I went out and looked at their web site. It looks like nice stuff. I wonder how cost-effective it will be though. Do you plan on going all the way around the inside of the panels? I ask this, because the surface is not flat running vertical. It has a moisture gutter running from top to bottom.The only flat surface is along the tops of the side panels and the bottom of the roof panels. However, if you're talking about just using it where the panels meet the bracing, then I guess it wouldn't do much better than screws, IMHO. Good luck either way.

I had a look too. I am in the process of emptying my fridge so I did not find what I was looking for on the 3M site.

How does 3M Dual Lock stand up to UV?

UV is the killer for tape, coverings etc on greenhouses.

A recent update from the person who received the yucca is that it is green and doing well. The transplanted cholla are doing well, of course, but it will be a while before I know if any sacaton survived. We have been making progress but not as quickly as we hoped. (No surprise there! ;-) ) We have the foundation blocks for the outside beds in place up to ground level and filled with dirt. Pavers have been placed, but not yet leveled, between the existing shed and the north edge of the foundation. We have the water and electrical stubbed in. We have the SHCS tubes in place for the outside beds of the east greenhouse and hope to start filling that section soon with the removed dirt. We have removed all planned use of poured concrete from our plans and have made this planned structure possible to remove easily while still unlikely to be blown away. (Mostly due to bolting the foundation via J-bolts to rebar under bond beam cement blocks.) DH will be checking to see what type of permits/inspections we will need for electrical, water, and structures. I suspect that it will be just water and electric. We won't fill in any more until we find out. It is getting hot already so we will be putting in the outside structure and shade cloth before the central shed and greenhouses. That way we can work in the shade. :-)

I used 10' lengths from Home Depot. I didn't flatten the ends, I just bolted it in. At the corners near the rear wall I used 90 degree bends (sold at home depot) with EMT connectors. This gave me a solid U shaped reinforcement. For the overhead cross braces, I did flatten the ends and bolt them to the existing EMT. I used long 6mm bolts from Fastenal for all of the attachment. They slide into the grooves of the vertical T braces. A hacksaw goes through it really quick. You don't need any special cutter. Just get a blade for cutting metal.

Hi Mark, congratulations! The vents on my 10x12 are my least favorite part of the greenhouse. I do have them all working, but they seem quite flimsy and the fit is rather fussy. They are noisy in wind. I do have a larger gap on the corner of the vent closest to the overlap of the roof crown pieces (parts 10 and 11) as you mentioned, although it seems to open and close OK. I am impressed you built it by yourself. It would have been very, very difficult for me to get this up without the good help of my husband. Those of you who go it alone get a tip of the hat from me. I ended up following oraylawsons idea about using an adhesive to attach the bottom door rail frame to the base frame. That worked out well. Boy, I totally missed this tip! Wish I had thought of that, I really don't like how loosely the bottom door frame slides and moves on the base frame. Our greenhouse is hot too. With the doors open and all vents open, my greenhouse is at least 120 lately (that's as high as my cheap thermometer goes, I suspect it's higher.) Ventilation and cooling are next on the list of challenges. I will keep my fingers crossed for you on the high winds issue (and crossed for us too.) With all the good modifications given on this site, I'm pretty confident things will go well. One of my concerns is what will happen when we get a big gust of wind when I have the doors and vents open for cooling. I can batten down the house and secure the doors for oncoming storms, but our random sudden wind gusts here are kind of uncharted territory. I hope you will keep us posted on how things go for you! I built this greehouse specificially for starting bedding plants. I don't start heating it until the first week in Feb. At the time I didn't think a ground heat sink would have that much effect so I didn't do it. If I had it to do over again I would put the lip of the 2x4 base to the inside and put some foam board into a trench and up to the redwood around the base on the outside. The insulation on the north side just goes to the bottom of the redwood. The trays didn't melt uniformly along the whole shelf. It was just the 2 trays or so in the corners on the top shelf where the light would get concentrated. None of the seeds in those trays germinated however. Low angle sun reflecting from the top combined with the corner reflection against the dark plastic of the trays made for some real hot spots. I you look at my weather station at http://wx.uvci.com I have a temp sensor in a tray of soil on the soil heating germination mat. When the soil is dry and a bright sunny day the temp will get up to 130 easily. Another change I would make is to have the potting bench in the end just sit on supports rather than build it in. That way it could be easily taken out when not in use. It would make getting to the last two feed of shelf much easier. It also gets a lot of water on it when watering which has caused the composit material it is made from to expand. I will probably replace it next year and when I do It will not be built in permanently like it is now.

Verrry innerrresting! You'd probably need $150 worth of this stuff, but it would appear not only to secure the panels, but in addition would keep them from rattling (if all you do otherwise is a couple of screws i.e. no caulking). I don't like the idea of caulking my panels, I'd rather have the option to take them-out for various reasons.

Good point about UV--I couldn't put my fingers on any info about this in the few minutes of research I've done.

I saw that and didn't realize the pics were of the tape--looked like something else.

Still I'm glad we have a smart-ass from down-under to jump-in with his brilliant put-downs everywhere. Wouldn't be any fun around here without one...

I am probably going to try the dual-lock along with screws both top and bottom on each panel. We are in a fairly high wind area and I don't like doing things twice. This forum has provided invaluable suggestions for me prior to construction.

I purchased a few hundred stainless steel #6 x 3/4" screws and aluminum rivet backing plates, and screwed all the panels to the framework.

We have experienced some unbelievable wind this winter, along with several inches of snow, and the greenhouse does not budge. It's rock solid.

I have ordered a roll of the dual-lock stuff myself, not (necessarily) for the GH but to secure some acrylic panels as Storm Windows on a north room of our house! Should arrive today--I will report later.

After looking at my panels again, it seems the tape would work best at the panels' top-and-bottom, with screws at the middle piece(s), though I suppose the tape might be used there too...

A little off topic but after looking at your GH photos I am impressed with the shelf unit to the rear. Just curious if you have put together a material list, it looks like a great way to functionally reinforce the rear wall. I would appreciate the input.

The vertical pipes and all fittings are 3/4" galvanized. All horizontal pipes (tubes) are 3/4" EMT thinwall conduit, and the shelves themselves are 2x4 cattle panel. If you have questions you should prolly ask in my other thread.

I got my dual-lock tape yesterday (the 5/8" low profile stuff) and may fiddle with it today. It's a little wide for my storm window application so will likely try to cut it lengthwise. It's hard to say out-of-the-box whether it has "the right stuff" yet but looks very promising.

I cant tell how you attached your shelves to the back wall and side wall on the backside of your shelves, would you help me with that for I want to build mine like that just want to get it right.

bwright I used the Dual Lock today to secure 4 acrylic "storm windows" to some north-facing aluminum windows today, and this stuff is the real deal! Backing comes-off easily, tape applies well, glue holds strong. I could slit the tape easily w/a utility knife where it was too wide. It holds the 0.100" acrylic very well; my wife and I give it four thumbs-up! Tho I haven't tried it yet on our GH polycarb panels, I'm certain it will work great to keep panels in place, even ours which are secure but which "rattle" in a wind. It will be nice to secure these at the tops and the bottoms especially.

Go to fastenation.com for a good deal on the tape.

The ~24" EMT conduit pieces that attach to the back wall do so via 1" L-brackets welded into the ends of these pipes (12 places in all). You could drill and screw the L-brackets also I suppose. The cattle panels just lay on top of the pipes (I tied them down in a couple places w/galvanized wire) and in the back corners I had to get creative--in several cases the panel is simply supported with screws, in others I had to put-in some brackets. Maybe I will post pics sometime, but these ain't particularly clever or pretty.
