Name That Plant!

It's not marijuana, but well, what is it???

This is growing in the garden of a home we just bought, among trumpet vines and other unknown flowering plants. Looks kinda like pot, smells kinda like pot....Anyone have any idea what it is? Sports 5-7 lobed leaves, the longest tend to be serrated slightly,otherwise smooth, and clusters of green unopened flower buds(I think they are called spikes?)One set of buds has opened and the flowers are tiny and purple. I love the smell (strong when leaf is rubbed) but my dogs do too, and I worry it might be something unsafe for them. Cannot find out without an ID...Sorry for nighttime photos, no time for curiosity during daylight hours around here! If it helps, this is in southern Nevada.

I know of a guy who hedged his marijuana amongst tomato plants, and then added red fishing bobbers to the marijuana plants. Grew them around the perimeter of his backyard, and never had a problem. I'd never recommend such a brazen maneuver, however. I also know of a family who'd been growing opium poppies for quite some time, right out on an open hillside, harvesting the plants, and making "tummy medicine." That just about cracked me up. I like it when you say you are not an expert. Many say they are who are not. I always have a problem with what someone is about to say, when they start off their sentences with, "absolutely". I'm not an expert either but our info is good to consider because we are doers and experimenters. Experts can't be bothered to answer any of our questions as they are too busy preaching to the crowds. We end up having to read books and ask others for advice and then the most important part we give it a try and report our success and failures to others. Thanks again for your advice and I value your input. I will keep my questions to a minimum and start building my tank. I will send you pictures on this site, or start a new string, of my progress with it. Others are welcome to weigh in on this stuff with their opinion as well. Even the "experts".

The flower spike visible in the original poster's image makes
Hibiscus unlikely in the extreme.

I got the impression that the flower spike belonged to a separate plant near the base of the larger plant. The larger plant looks almost identical to the hibiscus plants I have.

I vote Vitex as well, in the description they said it smells like marijuana...I don't think Hibiscus has that kind of smell but Vitex kinda does. :)
