Concrete Pond Design Tips

I've decided to build an 8 ft. x 4 ft. x 3 ft.(deep) concrete pond. That comes out to about 720 gallons. I plan on incorporating a skimmer, floor drain, low and mid-level intakes and venturi returns as well as a water fall. The water will be pumped into a 120 gallon bio/mechanical filter system.

I plan on keeping US native fish and plants. I'm trying to stay with fish that are compatible with my climate. I live in Norfolk Virginia.

My question is in regards to heating this size and type of pond. I'm wondering how hard will it be to maintain around 55 degrees (F) during our cold spells? I plan on keeping some minnows, shiners and sunfish.

Norfolk is somewhat temperate, rarely snows and usually gets cold in Feb. The small river in front of my house does freeze over occasionally.

Does anyone have any tips for my strategy?

Thanks in advance.....

p.s. I currently keep 4 tropical tanks.
