Well, I thought I had purchased ' variegated sweet flag'. I wasn't aware that there might be differences. I do note that both listed varieties are called variegated. Mine don't go dormant; at least not the ones directly in the water. I note that your link showed an individual offshoot. I got mine as a big clump of perhaps 25 to 50 offshoots all growing together in a gallon? pot sitting in water at a garden/pond store. Originally, I just put the pot in a few inches of water at the edge of my pond. Eventually, I divided the pot into 4 or so sub clumps and sunk them into areas of my recycled stream. I now just lay a rock (like one or three of yours) on top of some of the root clump to keep roots underwater and they take off from there. The real issue is to keep them under control. In your pond, they would probably expand everywhere, under and over rocks. If you left them alone, you would probably have a hard time getting them loose from entwined clumps of rocks, roots and more rocks and roots. Just keep an eye on them and do some separation. They will grow on land that remains moderately damp. The land clumps may go close to dormant, but not really. My guess is that your link is simply wrong or is focused on the zones closer to 4 rather than 7 where I am. I like it because it grows very well but you still need variety. If you get significant shade you will find that impatiens and Hosta will both grow directly in water but are probably better in wet pots. Elephant Ear like a BIG pot in water too and can probably take much more sun. The hosta and EEs would also grow in the ground; go dormant; and re-emerge next year. I don't think the EEs would overwinter in the water.

nat4b, I'm getting rid of Frances Fay, Gordon Biggs, disco rose, Eenie Fanfare, Little Bee, & Mokan Butterfly. Frances Fay blooms ok, but is short & I don't care for the flower. Gordon Biggs & Disco Rose don't bloom much, Gordon doesn't open fully very often. Some people like Mokan Butterfly, it always blooms, but as few as 3 buds per stalk, & hasn't multiplied enough to compensate. Eenie Fanfare & Little Bee, I just don't care for, not much for the little bitty ones unless they are a little fancier. Mantis, if you are talking about the cream in the 1st group, that is a seedling. But I looked up Pearl Harbor & they have Ida's Magic as a parent in common, & the other parent in mine is August Wedding which looks a lot like Pearl Harbor's other parent. maryl, DH says he looks like he is sitting on his "throne". Men & their bathroom humor. Laura, if you want I can send you some of Ivan back. I don't think it has multiplied a lot, but should get at least a nice big fan. I think that is one I got from you a couple of years ago. A group of daylilies that have been wonderful this year. I don't know if you saw, Rock Solid is up to 6 fans now, 3 of them have 3 bloom scapes each, 2 have 2 scapes, the 6th one is too small. I am totally amazed by it.

I did consider bullfrogs . But in seven years of obsevering my yard and eight months with a swampy gold fish pond i have never seen or herd bull frogs . The tree frog i mentioned was bitten bye the turle the night i posted lol and has not returned. Prior to lebrons intoductiom to tje pond i had always wished for bullfrogs niw i am happy it never happened

Hi Dave, thanks, but not sure what site you are referring to. My daughter is a reluctant plant person. She's a very busy person and doesn't make time to learn about a plant's needs. She was given this Fig tree by a friend who was moving and didn't want to take it with her. She likes the way it looks and was willing to water it on a schedule, once a week to remember to do it. Beyond that, it's like pulling teeth. [g]. I've already returned it to her, so it's not my responsibility any more. But that reminds me, I'm going to have to send her some more information on that Fig Tree, so thanks for linking to that thread. Funny story, the Fig Tree had three main branches, two of which were stronger than the third. But the third branch just happened to be the middle upright branch and the two strong branches were sprawling out on either side. When my daughter was retrieving the plant, she was moving into a new apartment that was a little smaller than the last and she didn't think the Fig Tree was going to fit. I had no room to keep it. So she had the bright idea of just lopping off the side branches to leave the one main branch in the middle. I was pretty horrified. lol. And while I was objecting and explaining why I objected, she was busy looking for the pruning shears. In two minutes she had both those branches off the tree. I could barely watch. And believe it or not, she was right. It looked much better. She moved it into the new apartment and it just works great. So, I will pass along the link, but she's on her own with her fig tree again. :-)
