An allium, maybe garlic. If you had picked the end off a leaf and smelled it you would have realized what kind of critter they were.

I too wondered if they were a native ant. They're about 2 mm long, black, very shiny, thorax segmented into about four segments each decreasing in size moving toward the abdomen. They move very slowly. I found some ( a dozen or so) in some duff under a shrub, and, as I mentioned, the others on a sunflower. They are able to make their way up the hirsute stems of the sunflower plant. They are so small they can walk around the stiff hairs. I did a brief search with no luck. May try again, now that I have gone outside and looked at them more closely with a lens and ruler. Interestingly, after many years of fighting argentines, with baits, spray etc. I have virtually eliminated them from my yard. Underscore virtually. I still find a few here or there but no big colonies. When I find one I destroy it. I have been spraying "Home Defense" around the foundation of my house once or twice a year, and I think ths has helped. Bob

I still tell this one to this day. A friend of mine, myself and a few others were coming home from his girl friends one afternoon. This guy's car was a 1954 Zepher. It was held together by coat hangers and hose clamps. Including the exhaust system. We went over a set of railway tracks and the muffler fell off and Terry drove over it. It was still in good shape according to Terry so he made an emergency stop on the side of the road and ran over to it. Do i need to say more ? Yes he picked it up with bare hands. That was the wildest and funniest dance i ever did see. Yes he got 3rd degree burns to parts of his hands. He put the muffler back on later. Then there was the time Funky the Junky, ( we called him that for obvious reasons ) got pulled over for no speedometer. He had a 32 essex body on a 1953 Auston frame. His speedometer was a Big Ben alarm clock with the little hand missing. The cop shook his head , laughed like hell and told us we have 1/2 hour to get that thing home and off the road.
