What's blooming NOW in your Zone 5 garden?

I'm in my second year of my garden, and I'm trying to bring in more plants with staggered bloom times. I have crabapples that bloomed mid-May, a Japanese Snowball Viburnum that just ended last week, and several phlox just ended. In bloom now: Little Kim Lilac and Lydia Broom. I've added some shasta daisies, Veronica Speedwell 'Royal Candles', zonal geraniums, and my Delphinium is about to bloom. I also have ornamental grasses, hostas, and some evergreens.

What shrubs or perennials can I add to give some color June to September (or later)? Our last frost is generally mid-May, and first frost is mid-Oct. I'm planning to do most of my planting in the fall. Thanks for any suggestions.

Some of the Hydrangeas are in bloom now, like "Annabell" and my "Quick Fire" is well budded and beginning to open. There are others.

Physocarpus 'Diablo Ninebark' finished blooming about 10 days ago, but now has beautiful deep red 'berries'.

Itea virginica 'Little Henry' has been in bloom for about 2 weeks.

Hypericum are blooming now

Many of the Spirea are early in their blooming phase at this tme.

For perennials:
Daylillies..the early bloomers are getting underway
Shasta Daisy..began to open about a week ago
Aisiatic Lillies.. are at peak now
Asclepia incarnata.. a pink butterfly weed in bloom now
Liatris kobold..just beginning to open
Echinaceas
Heliopsis 'Lorraine Sunshine'
Nepetas.. have been in bloom for nearly a month, still look good
Stachys Hummelo and Satchys Big Betony..lambs ears with very pretty bloom are opening now.

For ground cover, I love the creeping thymes in bloom now.

My Hydrangeas (Endless Summer and clones) are blooming beautifully.

Also look some of the low maintenance shrub roses.

Knockout (Red, Pink, Blush, Double, Sunshine, etc.)

Karen, I've had these in pots in zone 6 for 10 years....they mulitply very rapidly and I started with 2 and now have several hundred so watch out!!! The bulb will get as big as your fist when mature so yours is likely a baby. They are also not completely reliable bloomers every year in my zone anyway.....they bloom early in the summer just after the leaves emerge for me, but I can have 20 monster bulbs and 40-50 offsets in a giant tub and only get a half-dozen or so flower spikes. Four of my five did survive the winter but all died back to the ground. I thought they were dead, but patience paid off and they sent up new growth from the roots. Now with some rain and heat they are catching up and are all between 3-4'. They normally get to be 6-8' by the end of the season when I cut them back to 1-2' in the spring (when the woody part didn't die back.) Don't know the variety since I started them from seed . They all have that light lavender colored flowers. I think they will bloom fine with the rate they are growing now. Store bought butterfly bush never lasted more than a year or two for me, but the seed grown ones are still going strong. The winter sure was hard on things though. My trumpet creeper that normally completely covers and drapes down from our our large willow tree snag that is 15-20' tall has died all the way back the ground. There is just a few feet of growth at the base and it looks pretty sad.

My muscari are still blooming, and have been for several weeks."Hillstar" narcissus starting blooming 2 days ago, but I just planted them last fall, so they may actually be slightly earlier. The peony-flowered tulips are also coming into bloom now in Chicago suburbia.

My neighbor has a whole slew of what I think might be poppies coming up. They too have droopy heads and a very furry serrated edged leaf. What makes their heads droop? Is that how it is supposed to be? I'll have to figure out how to post pics. Our neighbors have a beautiful garden, albeit neglected for a few years(lady of the house, who worked the garden, passed this year). Since we just moved in last July, it has been so interesting to see what sprouts up as spring progresses. It is a bit sad, though. Someone obviously took great joy in tending to it. There are at least 20 varieties of tulips that I can see and irises and peonies will be flowering soon. It's all I can do to keep myself from going over there, weeding and spreading a little compost around! Unfortunately, they have a surly dog and I have 3 little ones and the two don't mix...so I am not able to help out. Also unfortunate is that the house might be a scrape, so all that work will be destroyed! so sad :(

Cornus kousa still looking good with only a few bracts starting to brown and Stewartia pseudocamellia.

daphne "Lawrence Crocker" is reblooming right now.

stewartia pseudocamellia has a single bloom open.

echinaceas are coming in, and the lavender are in bloom.

daphne x transatlantica "Jim's Pride" is starting to flower, and if it behaves as usual it'll be a blooming machine until the first hard freeze. It's a great plant, the only thing wrong with it is that it doesn't handle snow load very well.

leptodermis oblonga has been blooming for about 4 or 5 weeks, it usually puts on a good show for quite a while as long as it doesn't get fertilized.

I just planted three tiny daphne x mantensiana "Manten" this year, and one of them has a single rebloom. They're only about 3" tall, so now I've got good reason to hope that they'll be reliable rebloomers as they grow up.

One of my first and longest bloomers in June was my weigela. The wine and roses was nice, but the Red Prince was just too gorgeous and just glowed along with the Rosy Glow Barberry they were behind. The Red Prince also lasted a really long time - over 2-3 weeks I think, whereas the Wine and Roses was much shorter lived. Not sure if it was because the Red Prince had some partial shade or what. I was so enamoured with the profuse blooms that I am adding it to my "must" list of things to mass plant in the future.

Jims Pride is an outstanding bush - blooms for months on end with white blooms that are deliciously fragrant.

What similar plant has red or pink flowers?

Oak leaf hydrangea (watch out, these get massive!)
spiraea "anthony waterer"
curly leaf spiraea (sp?)
daylilies (there are all seasons for these)

Yucca (Adam's needle, those puppies are taller than me this year--5'4"), salvia, monarda, sedum, coreopsis, asiatic lilies, russian sage, hypericum (St. John's wort), annabelle and endless summer hydrangea, potentilla, centhranthus ruber (keys of heaven), clematis, aruncus (goatsbeard), buddelia, spirea (shirobana), nepeta and aesculus paviflora (buckeye). Astilbe are just rapping up and daylilies and phlox are about to bloom.

I think that's it...

Geraniums, but they don't really count 'cause they're annuals.
