I would take it out of that cache pot. Does not look like water can drain out, if it does not there is a reservoir of still water and the pot itself restricts airflow. Put together you get mold. Also, there is a possibility those roots are sitting in that water and can lead to rot. Lovely orchid though :)

Some have had success with them and some have not. I've grown mine from seeds, except for one that I bought from a pond shop. That one died and my nephews unwanted dog ate the others when I floated them in Spring. As to what variety they are. They could be anything but there is a good chance that they are probably Sacred Lotus.

We have a huge natural state preserve area here where I live here in North Central Florida called Paynes Prairie. Its just that, a huge prairie that is normally dry. But its a watershed area in rare times of flooding. In dry times its just trees, scrub palmetto, and there is a herd of wild Bison on it and tons of other wildlife. Portions of Payne's Prairie (if you Google it you can see some info about it) have flooded only twice in the almost 17 years I have lived here, once in the late 1990's when we had a summer of record breaking rainfall, and again in Spetember 2004 when we were hit with 2 tropical storm/hurricanes in less than 2 weeks (Frances and Jeanne). Both times, the Prairie blossomed almost overnight with huge areas of yellow American Lotus that had been dormant for many many many years. It was like magic. You could see the first the huge aerial leaves shooting up, and later the flowers, 1000's of them, from highway 441 when you drove past. It was such a show people were causing traffic jams stopping to take photos and the sheriff had to have guys out there patrolling to try to keep people from stopping and causing wrecks. The local newspaper photographer, John Moran, went out to the Prairie and took some fantastic photos of the lotus when they were in bloom. SO, yes, I would try it. These plants were dormant for YEARS and YEARS, just waiting for enough rain to bring them back to life, so you never know.

It is very vigorous as a container plant in a part sun deck in my own backyard. It hasn't really stopped blooming over the whole year now that I've had it. Mine was a gift from Annie herself, who thought I would really appreciate this plant, and boy was she correct. At her nursery it does equally well in full all-day sun as a container plant or in the ground. I haven't noticed any seed on my plant, but then again, I haven't really been looking. It may be self-infertile, or lack the insect that pollinates it here in California. Some plants like the equally rare Deppea splendens needs a second clone to actually create fertile seed.
