Got it - Zephirine Drouhin. I just put 2 in the ground so I can't tell you of my experience but based on others and the pictures/info at helpmefind.com/roses do a search and put in the name. It says it's a climber,,bourbon rose,,hot pink,,fragrant and a repeat bloomer and gets 10-12 ft tall. I saw it on a garden show on HGTV that they no longer air,,and it was just heavenly so who could forget that name! Ha,,so much for the G part in HGTV. Anyway, I loved it, supposedly it also will tolerate shade. That is the area I put it in that gets mroe shade than I'd like. So I'll keep my fingers crossed on it. If you like hot pink and white stripes that is a climber and fragrant I just put Berries 'n' Creme in the ground by Star or Weeks I think,,has fragrance and mine has two open blooms and it's going to be a knock with interest too.

Syl Arena told me, he once asked Peter Beales WHY in God's name he'd said that Zephirine Drouhin bloomed in shady conditions, and Beales said he'd always rather regretted that.

ZD will probably GROW in shade, but your volume of bloom will likely be in proportion to amount of sun.
Over the years, I've heard many complaints that bloom is sparse at least in early years.
BUT that could be a shade thing.
And where powdery mildew is a problem, there are complaints of that problem.

Most Bourbons, including ZD, will produce a spring show and a pretty good fall show with a few blooms in between. But MAGGIE, oh Maggie breaks the mold! As close to continuous flowering as any rose, and very fragrant. She also has healthier foliage than any other Bourbon I've ever grown. Very double and pouffy-- yep! Hope you get good responses here but it'll be a short list as climbers as a rule don't tend towards continuous bloom. You might also search "Laguna" (Kordes 2004) and Parade (Boerner, old) on this forum and read what people say.

ZD is very beautiful, but I understand it has lots of problems with blackspot and can completely defoliate. For the back of the house, I might risk it, but not the first impression front wall. Parade does look very pretty indeed. How's the smell? Maggie is a little bit too red, but lovely. I've been researching to answer my own question tonight, and have come up with this list so far. Anyone know/grow these?

Are you planning to spray consistently for blackspot, or try and select a rose which will perform no-spray?

Assuming you're building a support for the rose, how big a rose can you handle?

Are you looking for a rose that will repeat well even if you don't dead-head?

We'll get this narrowed down yet! lol

From what I've heard, Zepherine Drouhin is far from an everblooming rose. Some people have said that it more or less blooms well once and then not much after that. For others it does rebloom but I have never heard anyone say ZD is a continuous-blooming rose and there can be disease problems, as you've already mentioned.

Have you considered Cl. Pinkie? Not pouffy, I'm afraid, but an easy-care rose.

The Perfect choice would however be: Laguna from Kordes:

Totally disease resistant, fully double flowers and great against walls and the colour fits too. Very fragrant and will grow at least 12 feet tall or more!:

Parade could also be a choice. Coral Dawn another ... I wish Aristide Briand were availble in the US that would have been a good choice too. Then there is Zephirine Drouhin. Like Jeri said takes a few years to get established and to rebloom (If it grows at all) I have seen estimated rosarians .I think the President of the International Heritage rose can´t (I have seen him trying....LOL). And it can mildew really badly!!! I think when people say it tolerate shade they mean some shade or part shade. But still it does better in at least 6 hours of direct sunlight and afternoon shade.

OK, some questions from Barbarag--Blackspot resistance is super important. I have to spray even resistant varieties in my humid, hot area. I've got a two story house, and the rose could reach the roof, or just over the first story. I would not like it to cover the entire house though. And absolutely yes I want good repeat even if I am lazy about deadheading. With a climber, I envision that I will be lazy about deadheading.

Ingrid, funny you mention cl.Pinkie. I've just got her--plan to train her as a weeping bush in the back though.

Cupshaped--you are making some superstar suggestions!! Leave it to you. Laguna looks stupendous.

Anyone want to differentiate in terms of smell, color, repeat on Parade, Laguna, and Coral Dawn?

After a few years, Zephrine Drouhin repeats much better but it takes about 6 years and mine does better as far as blackspot, anthracnose in some shade than it did in full sun.

Parade is not as fungus-resistant as New Dawn and Awakening. It does bloom sporadically throughout the season but it also requires high culture to get it to bloom well.

Antique 89 is one of my favorite climbers with darker pinks but my favorite pinks (too light for you) are Clair Matin (blooms more frequently than anything but Knockout) and Renae(again too light)which is thornless.

I used to have Rhonda. This rose is so pretty and has New Dawn as a parent. I left it behind at the old house but will have a new one this fall.

Cl. Cramoisi Supérieur could work for you, even though it is classified as a red, it is dark pink for me, as is my Mr. Lincoln. Grows to 20', occasional repeat, fragrant, fully double blooms, but a little slow to fill in. It's described as "bulletproof" by Chamblee's.

I'm still researching. I think I have it narrowed down to either Pink Cloud or Laguna. Can anyone comment on Pink Cloud?

After all this, I wound up going with Lawinia. I don't know, something spoke to me when I saw the picture, plus I like the idea of trying a Tantau. I hope I like the smell. I'm going to remember the others suggested here for the future, though. Thanks everyone!

My ZD never defoliated though lost leaves when I didn't spray. And it isn't bad at all in terms of rebloom.

Furthermore, mine is on the north side of the house, so it gets sun early morning and late afternoon. IMHO, in the south she does tolerate some shade, I have been growing this rose for minimum 8 year if not more.
