Can't say as though I've ever noticed that.

One of the most beautiful sites I ever saw was many years ago big snowstorm hit and after it all settled down here I am at up at 4:00 a.m. to start the early shift, I look out the window and here on a brightly moonlit, starlit night is a singular rabbit sitting atop the fresh-fallen, pristine sparkling snow. It was like something right off a Christmas greeting card, and I've never forgotten that image.

There is beauty all around us, we just need to notice it (but that doesn't mean I don't want spring to hurry up and get here...)

Well, IMO, the best thing about snow is that it melts and goes away. The sooner, the better, IMO. I think I would be very happy in a climate where there were a couple of little snowstorms and it all melted in a day or two, and it was never cold enough to really hurt anything. Alas, fate put me in the wrong state for that.

I really did appreciate the 2' of snow we got this year as it melts and soaks into the ground in the form of needed moisture, and also because it protected the gardens from the sub-zero cold we got! Even the normally tender lavender is lush and healthy today, and there is new growth everywhere. Crocuses are blooming, bluets starring the lawn, and daffodil buds are ready to pot! This time last week, we were still covered in snow. Today it was in the 70's!

Wow, crocus already?! Probably won't see those until ~3rd or 4th week of March over here (which is only ~4 weeks away anyway)

I like those sunny days we get in March when it's about 20 to 30 degrees with no wind and "warm" sun when snowshoeing is through the woods and fields is at its best.

I don't recall seeing blue snow but after my cateract operation if I go out on a bright day without sunglasses the next day the snow has a pinkish cast; not pretty but at least it's not yellow!

Yes, I have seen the "blue" snow. It's beautiful. It's not the snow I mind, it's the sub-zero temps that get me. I can't imagine not having snow in the winter. In those years where we've had very little snow I've missed it. I will admit that the 70" inches this year was a bit much and I'm glad to see some of it melting. I don't want it to melt to quickly though, a slow melt so the moisture can soak into the soil and I still have some to protect my plants from cold snaps that are still sure to come. The snowshoeing has been great this year.

i also like.. on near full moon nights ... with the white snow.. you actually have moonshadows from the leafless trees ... now there is musical peanut butter ....

yeah denni.. i agree.. i am trying to be the optimist here ... lol .... there has to be some good in what winter offers ...

Well, yes, I will concede that it can be very pretty.

While the snow is heavy, I can relax, knowing that my plants are safe. Those established in the garden, those planted late last fall (November here) and those in pots stored under the snow for next year. Once the snow begins to melt, it gets trickier, and survival, depending on the year, and the type of melt becomes more tenuous for the plants in pots.
I find it very beautiful. In fact, we are leaving our very snowy property this weekend to attend a winter festival. Almost every day, I chop wood, to keep me active and fit, but mostly, so that I have an excuse to work in the forest for a while. I love stopping and listening to the bird calls - different than those birds which come up to the feeders near the house. The stark relief of the black cherry and maple trees against the white of the snow is phenomenally beautiful.
I love the strengthening sun of February. Outside, it feels as cold as ever, but we open the doors in the late morning to collect the early solar for the house.
Ken, the snow does turn blue certain times of the day. This winter has also been exceptionally bright, with lots and lots of sunny days. And though we haven't had a proper snow storm in weeks, there is a dusting every night which keeps things fresh.

It's pretty and it might mean I get a day off work. (Things grind to a halt if we get more than a couple of inches!) And it doesn't last more than a few days.

Snowdrops fading here. Crocuses well out. Daffodils on the point of opening.

We usually have snow from the end of November till the end of March - or April in a really bad year.
Winter dwellers have to find ways to like it, or they'll go crazy.
Honestly, I think one of the reasons people hate it so much is because they have not learned how to dress properly. They're cold and they are miserable.
We have also become slaves of our heating and cooling systems. If the temperature is not a perfect 72 degrees, we complain. Most people experience winter by dashing from their car to their house or office. No wonder they are cold.

Is this similar to what you see? Took this pic at about 5:15 PM yesterday afternoon at a local beaver pond. This photo has not been edited, only resized to make it smaller. The sun was setting and the snow looks very light blue to me. I often see blue in the snow, and the shadows that fall on the snow.

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing! Good thing I like snow as we're predicted to get another 5-10 or 8-10 or 10 or more inches depending on which forecast I'm listening to.

yeah that is basically it.. though it can be much bluer ...

as the sun declines ... your eyeballs open wider... seeing a greater spectrum of colors.. and the reflection of the blue sky.. on the white snow becomes very intense...

and can even be increased if there is some orange or pink at sunset.. since that is the complementary color to the blue ...

The snow on a full moon looks insanely blue...its amazing how bright it looks on those nights.

Snow is ok, cold temps are ok...blizzards, no thanks!

Ken, this this what you mean? I took this in broad daylight after the big storm earlier this month. This is a full sun area on the south side of my property. Under that hump is my granit garden bench. The rose of Sharon growing behind it is tall as I am.

Hi Ken,
I saw something similar in the banks of snow created by a tractor bucket/blade on a hazy afternoon. Overall, it looked like normal snow, but there were some crevices and spaces in-between the chunks that almost "glowed" a really cool blue similar to gardenweed's picture. I had to call out my son to verify the "glowness" of it, hehe. Of course, he just said "Yeah - cool" and went back inside. I thought it was awesome!

With the recent thaw and refreeze, I can now see my Euonymus 'Frosty Pearl' and Japanese Tassel Fern poking through the snow (love the evergreens this time of year!).

Even though the snow is very pretty to look at... I can't wait until spring!!!

Well if it keeps coming down at this same rate all night we may just hit that possible 20 inches they were talking about. Judging from the size of the drifts in my front yard I'm guessing we have added 10 or 11 inches so far from this storm.
Guess my plants will remain tucked in for a bit longer.
