Very Small Weigela Plant

My half-price order from Bluestone came and I'm amazed at how small this shrub is. I went back to the page and sure enough they said 4" pot, so I should have looked harder at it, but if I'd paid full price I would not be a happy camper.

It's so small that I'm not sure what to do with it. Should I do like a small clematis and put it in a gallon pot and bury it in the garden to let it mature some more and plant it next year? It's literally so small (about 8") that I'm afraid to plant it where I eventually want to put it.

It appears healthy and is a Carnival, a variety they didn't have locally, so I shouldn't complain. I just am hesitant to put it where it might get stepped on.

I'm no gardening guru, but i recommend just planting it in its permanent location. These plants are very easy to grow. If you are worried about stepping on it, you can put a small tomato cage around it. I like these marker flags you can get at farm supply stores - about 18 inches of wire with a piece of orange plastic - you can clearly see stuff like that without mowing over it. I put a hoop of chicken wire over shrubs that small to protect them from rabbits.

I planted a tiny weigela in a quart container from Lowes 2 years ago - even after some die back its almost waist high and covered with pink blooms. Its a shrub even those with brown thumbs can grow.

At my old place, I had a nursery bed which was a 4' x 8' raised box framed with boards where the soil was good and access with the hose was easy. I grew all my Bluestone shrublets there for a year before sending them out to face the deer and the woodchucks. Wish I still had that!

I think the little shrubs do better if their roots have room to spread, so either put it in a bed (in the ground)with the rest of your plants or put it in its permanent home. Either would probably be better than a pot.

The first is a Commelin aka dayflower, I believe. They don't grow here so I am not familiar with the different species. The second is Geranium sanguineum aka Bloody Cranesbill, I am pretty sure.

Plant them out asap. Echinops have long tap roots that make them difficult to transplant when big. Make sure to give them plenty of room- they will get pretty big once mature (saw one in town that must have been four feet around). Might be a good idea to put it in the back of the boarder too, since the foliage at the base of the plant becomes rather ugly and yellow after it blooms. The foliage is also very prickly- makes me itch terribly when I weed around it, LOL! Echinops is very weedy here, since it seeds like mad. I try to nip the seed heads off before they ripen, but some always sneak by me. Been thinking of taking it out, but everyone that sees it loves it so I am not sure... CMK

Thinking about what I see here in Western NY, which would have most of the same plants, and nothing comes to mind. But maybe this will help, were there seeds in sprays, clusters, pods, etc.? FYI - Pastures are generally full sun, not moist, and often compacted soil - if that helps anyone else in their musings.
