Moving a fortuniana grafted rose

I have contacted K&M and they recommended talking to a master rosarian in my area. The two I know only grow own root OGR's. Also checked the GW archives-one person seemed to have success. This is a 1 gallon Papa Meilland in the ground one year. If I dig wide can I safely put it somewhere else? Temps in the high sixties now. I can leave it but I think it needs more light to do really well.

Dig wide. Make sure it's new home has good soil. Move it quickly and water it good every day. This sounds dumb but if you have a large umbrella, fix it over the transplanted bush to shade it from the direct sun until you see new growth. Make SURE you keep it moist and don't even think about trying to feed it until at least 6 weeks after you start getting new growth. It should work. Several years ago I pulled this trick with 3 fortuniana bushs in Central Fl in the middle of July. They all survived and were going like wildfire by late fall.

Thanks Ken. I'll do all that. Those steps makes sense. The umbrella sounds like a very good idea especially with no rainy days in site. Mary

I did quite a bit of "V" grafting for my garden when I lived in FL. It was pretty simple. Had about an 80% take. Rooted the fortuniana in white Styrofoam cups with a few drain holes in the bottom. Once the fortuniana was rooted I would use a single edge razor blade and and cut the rose stem I wanted to graft first and put it in a cup of water. Then I would use a fresh razor and cut my fortuniana and put a few drops of water on the cut. Then I would CAREFULLY put my rose cutting into the fortuniana, making sure I didn't slide it all over the place. Then carefully wrapped it with parafilm. Then insert a small bamboo stake next to the grafted rose and lightly tie them together (just above the cutting on the rose stem). Then put each one out on the porch in indirect lighting. Using a spray bottle, mist the entire plant with water. Take a 2 ltr. Coke bottle with the bottom cut out and cover the entire plant, giving it a green house effect. Every morning I would mist the entire plant with water and lightly water the cup once a week to keep the soil moist. Worked great for me.

If root-knot nematodes are the concern, there are some things you can do to reduce or eliminate them -- incorporate some cheap clay kitty litter and lots of organic material into the bed, maintain a thick layer of organic mulch, "solarizing" the area before planting, and growing Marigolds around the rose are all things that will help. 'Fortuniana' rootstock is vigorous enough to compensate for nematode damage, so if you can find your rose on it, that will help as well. I have no problems with fortuniana grafted roses where I live (far N.E. GA.). I'm careful on first years plants. The graft union is still tender and if it's going to get 28 or colder, I'll take an old bath towel and gently wrap the bottom of the bush. After they get through that first winter, I have never had any problems. Now I just blow fallen leaves into the garden for the winter. Although Fortuniana is an "evergreen", it can be slowed down during cool weather. I just stop feeding after mid Sept. When the blooms are finished during Nov., I just cut the blooms off instead of cutting further down the stem.

I also read that it can get 8-10 feet tall... but I wasn’t sure if that was own root or not. If it can do that own root... I would need to keep that in mind and grow it as a climber if I successfully graft/bud it. Or maybe just grow it own root. So any experience with this one is very helpful! Especially in CA. I noticed in previous threads that Kittymoonbeam and a few others have grown this rose, but not a lot mentioned recently. Any experiences or advice would be helpful. :-) Thank you!

I have successfully moved roses that were grafted or budded onto Fortuniana many times. Move them in cool weather, never in mid-summer or hot temperatures. Like Ken said, dig a big hole, make sure to get most of the rootball when you dig it up, water well, and don't fertilize for at least 6 weeks. I also trim them at that time, as a larger bush will be more stressed out. If they have been in the ground for more than 3 years, it will be a bit riskier. Your Papa Meilland that has only been in the ground for a year should do fine.
