Name That Plant!

Anyone have any idea what this might be?

Hi. I indulged my need to save the dead and/or dying plants on the 50% cart @ Home Depot yesterday. There was no tag or any other identifying info on the pot other than the name of the grower.... from Homestead, FL (Miami-ish). The only thing it said was "Tropical." According to the garden gal @ the check out, it is definitely tropical and will die with the first frost if I leave it outdoors/in the ground. Does anyone have any clue what this might be? The trunk is thin with the branches pretty much starting near or at the top of the tree. Each branch is covered with leaves with these little buds/blooms appearing at the very end of each branch. The colors are a purplish/blue and white.... and is a little reminiscent of an orchid. Can anyone help so I can research whether or not I can chance some cold weather with this one? Thanks!

looks like a clerodendrum ugandense, but i'm not sure...beautiful flower- i was going to try and get one and winter it inside

Describing the shape and color of the bulb will help. What are the children shaped like? Look at the bulb carefully and describe it like you were writing and essay and wanted the class to guess what you were writing about. Some bulbs have an onion like skin. Tulips have a darker skin than a daffodil so you could say It is shaped similar to a medium large onion with a greenish skin and thick opening with brown dead wide stalks or stems where leaf petals will grow. Oh, this might be amarylis would be my thought. Or a lily would be many white petals or scales on the bulbs and so forth. TOO MANY BULBS NOT TO HAVE AN IN DEPTH DESCRIPTION.

Sounds like alfalfa pellets but I have never heard of anyone using them like that before. As mentioned above I don't think canes on a rose bush would be able to take having all that alfalfa piled directly on them. They'd rot. Most people scatter the alfalfa and scratch it in just like any other fertilizer. Unless you live in a wet climate like mine, I'd water them in. They don't work unless they're wet enough to start decomposing.

BunnyGirl - If they look like aphids they probably are. Aphids can be green, brown, pale, dark, almost black... It is not that hard to get rid of them besides squishing, I would try Safer Soap, anything with neem oil -(Shultz spray 3 in 1), 1/3 rubbing alcohol per 2/3 of water - spray, just use hot water to dilute. I heard a tobacco sun tea tea advice - but there an issue with tobacco mosaic virus. I presume if you boil 3 cigarettes in a pint of water, add 1/4 spoon of a dish soap - it will work . You can get lice shampoo in a pharmacy -and use it too - I would guess 1/4 of a teaspooon per pint will work too. You can spray it with Hennessy - and it will be as efficient. Soap suffocates them - and alcohol dehydrates them Good luck irina

I second that, Clerodendrum ugandense. A very pretty plant, I just bought one this spring, the flowers are beautiful.

Hi! I also agree! Thank you for your help. I checked out pix on the web.... and I believe you both re 100% right! I just need to figure out if it will survive the winter here.... one site said that it would... it would just die back to the ground and then come back next year.... and another said that it would just up and die period. Will continue to research.... have a while before it will get chilly enough to worry about it... and I will keep it in the pot until I know for sure! Thanks again!
