After you put the shovel away....

I've started digging the holes where the incoming roses are going to be planted. It has been a while since I did this, and the rose digging muscles are staging a protest.

I think for this evening, a hot bath, and a Tylenol or two will be called for.

What do you do after a long gardening day?

Sleep, and I usually have to have a nap the next day, too. I have arthritis in my spine, so heavy gardening for several hours a day knocks me for a loop.

seil: I've had this peace rose for about 5 or 7 years now and its always grown the same way... in a large T shape and always full of blooms along that top T line. This last year its been a real pain. I have had it tied up along a fence then moved it and tied it up along a flat straight up trellis attached to the side of our redwood shed. This year its been a real brat and not wanting to cooperate with me. Hopefully now that I've hacked it down to the stump and this new growth is taking off, it will look better. When I had it along the fence my neighbor would come out and cut it down level with the top of the fence. Every year I saw buds starting to form the next day I would come out and look to see the entire top level with the top of the fence. So my husband and I dug it up and moved it away from that fence where the neighbor couldn't reach it. ANYTHING that grows up above the top of that fence they hack right off. Yes I've asked them not to touch our things. Even balled my eyes out after they dug up my flowers from my front yard right before mothers day this year. I yelled at them through tears on mothers day... Would you PLEASE leave my yard alone!! Stop touching my things!! Mind your own property and leave ours alone!! We still hold out hope that the peace rose is going to look better next year now that its out of the reach of our hacker happy neighbor.

I saw one yesterday too. It surprised me. I don't think I've seen them in October before. I don't have any feeders filled but I have lots of salvia blooming. I have only seen one tanager in my life several years ago when we were in Branson. I think it was a Summer Tanager. I thought it seemed as red as a cardinal but slightly smaller and no crest. There are also Scarlet Tanagers that are bright red with black wings. Could it have been one of those Ceresone? Here is a link that might be useful: Summer Tanager

Well, the tree is down, boxed up along with all of the ornaments, etc. I also took the decs off of the trees in the urns that flank the front door:)) The small trees are lighted and look pretty even without the decorations. Outside garland and wreaths are going to remain until March. Also, the china cabinet and seasonal garlands in the house remain and will probably stay in place until March as well. I especially enjoyed the posts about the decoration or two you overlook. One year I had a Christmas moose that I didn't notice until July that year. It was tucked into a basket on the soffet in the kitchen. This year I am scanning the rooms carefully to be sure I've gotten it all. The house is clean and the attic looks fairly neat. A good feeling to start the work week with it all put away. The china closet packs up into a closet in the dining room, so that's really no big deal and besides, it looks nice with the winter garland on the dining room table. We'll see how long I can look at the holiday china and stemware before I cave in and put that away too! I would like to keep it in place until its time to decorate for Easter! It was fun reading all of posts. I was surprised at how many responses my post generated! Happy New Year to all!

I was dreading getting my first low volume toilet until I stayed in a hotel with the Toto line of products. Fortunately for me I procrastinated in getting one and now American Standard has the same type of engineering in their toilets for half the cost or less. I know I sound like a shill for American Standard but I LOVE my new Cadet 3 toilet. It is very quiet, flushes completely in 2 seconds (see video below) and refills quickly and quietly in 30 seconds. Any toilet that can flush over a dozen golf balls in 2 seconds can probably handle your 7-year-old's production. I decided the first time I DON'T have to call a plumber for a drain clean out, or embarrass my guests with plumbing problems, I will have easily paid for the toilet. If I owned a plunger I would clean it as best I could in the clean toilet, shake water off, and drop it in the trash can to dry.

Lol, me too, Camp! My family is very sick of hearing about it all but that doesn't stop me. I some times soak in a hot tub. I have one of those spa mats that makes air bubbles and that feels good! And I find it's better to go out and do at least a little gardening the next day to keep the muscles loose. Otherwise I'm even sorer the second day.

Camp you are funny!!!
I am having a small glass of Bailey's Irish Cream to help my overextended muscles. I'm not sure that is scientific, but it is dairy so nourishes, right?

It seems to energize me..So, I will work until I am exhausted to the core, many days, I will go w/o food , stopping only for a glass of tea or to use the bathroom... Then, I spend the next day on the sofa---finding more roses/bulbs/fruit trees/bushes/vines that I NEED and deciding where to plant them... It's a wonderful==never-ending cycle!

I recently got a rice heating pad for my shoulders and neck and it is my new go-to thing after a long day of digging, I get it as hot as I can stand and then snuggle up and let the heat soak into my shoulders and loosen up all of the knots. When I have the time I take a nice long bath, but it seems like most days as soon as I finish gardening it's time to clean up and cook dinner, then I don't have energy for a bath ;oP

A hot bath, a nap, a glass of wine, then another, dinner delivered, possibly another glass, then bed! Can't get any better than this when you're 70!

I am usually prone to want to get in the bed for a few days afterwards as I have Fibromyalgia and especially at the start of gardening season, a good yard work out causes a flare. But...I know that doesn't help either,lol...so...I take hot baths...Aleve...then sit on my porch and watch my birds and squirrels...that usually helps!
