Plant Suggestions for Conditions like Red-Hot Pokers

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in, but I'll try it anyways. I'm planning a new flower bed in a location that is currently completely wild (wild grasses and small bushes). The only cultivated plants growing in the general area of the new bed's location are Red-Hot Pokers (Kniphofia). I'd like to start all of the plants indoors from seed, where possible. Most of the area is in full sun, though it will get late afternoon shade from a tree.

I've never had my soil tested, and don't want to spend the money on it (I'd rather buy plants), so I don't know the type of soil, the fertility, or drainage. Based on the fact that the Red-Hot Pokers seem to thrive, can you determine what my soil is like, and make plant suggestions from there?

Also, does any one have any "homemade," inexpensive tests to determine drainage, soil type, etc.?
