I have trouble selecting Pump.....I seriously need help.

Hi ponders,

I've just finished building my pond. The pond have been left sitting for almost two weeks now. The problem to that is because i have problem selecting the right size pump and the right brand pump for my 700 gallons upper ground pond. I'm a high school student so i'm pretty much living under my parent's income. Therefore, i don't really have a lot of money to spend. I'm looking for an EXTERNAL pump that is energy efficient as well as reliable ( pump that doesn't die out after 6 months in use). I've been told about Oase Optimax, Pondmaster, Wlim, Little giant and Dolphin. I'm now stuck with those options. I really like the review about Wlim pump but they don't come in low GPH pump. My pond is 700 gallons not exactly sure how large my pump should be. It would be a great help to this little koi enthusiastic to see all the pros comments. Thanks : )

Pros!

A pro is someone who GETS money from ponds, right? Well I'm just the opposite of that.

To address your question,I have a Sequence AND a Dolphin pump in my main set-up.; both great pumps. However, they are way over your needs. I also HAD a Tiny Might pump at one time (1140 GPH @ 4 ft. head, low wattage ). This would make a excellent pump IMHO. Presently I use mine for my 600 gallon "Q" tank. Has been running everyday for a year. I attached a link, but shop around. You could probably find it cheaper somewhere else.

Wlim is the BEST pump around, but not cheap and not low flow. If you want a great all-around pump, look at the danner mag-drive pumps. They can be used submerged or dry and are very energy efficient.

Hi,With all the changes coming down the pike in years to come, choosing a TV can be daunting. We are looking for three 19-20" LCD TVs to be used as secondary TVs for bathroom/bedroom/kitchen nook - just straight TV watching, no DVDs. We're on cable -- only the main TV having an actual set-top cable box; auxilliary TVs just use cable input. Apparently TVs under 26" are not required to have ATSC digital tuners, and I haven't found any small TVs that have them (although I'm seriously confused on this point). OK, so what to do here -- I don't want a set-top cable box for every little TV in the house when everyone goes digital. These auxillary TVs would presumably have NTSC tuners - how's that going to play out? What's the most economical strategy in the long run? Buy LCDs w/o the ATSC digital tuners and replace them all later? Will there be converters available to access digital signals w/o forking out extra bucks to the cable company for each TV? What screen ratio would be best to buy, 4:3 or 16:9? What makes the most sense for secondary straight TV watching (via cable connection)? Also would appreciate recommendations as far as brands -- LG? Samsung? Sharp? Sony?, etc.? It's all too confusing - can't even write a proper question! Thanks for any input.

Things worked out ok! I started looking at all the paint cans we have in the house (colors we bought and all the sample size ones) as I must have 15-20 BM colors around. Thinking about the colors I love most in my house I tried Texas Leather. It was one of the Pottery Barn colors last year. Knew it would be too dark for the space but the color was good with the tile. Went to the paint shop (the store is AWESOME to work with) and looked at the other colors on the card. They are AC1 Coastal Fog, AC2 Berkshire Beige and AC3 Texas Leather. He said there was only so much they can do with it but he would try. He got the coastal fog no problem- I thought it was too light so he tried again. He talked to color consultant in the store and she made some suggestions and they mixed again. I think the result looks pretty close to the Berkshire Beige the middle color on the card. Maybe a little lighter but not too much. I am pleased! I will take and post a few pictures later. I should have taken a few of the Spa to compare. A good paint shop is worth its weight in gold. They saved the $65 gallon of Aura for free. Thanks again everyone.

Kike99gt asked a legitimate question which seems to have been overlooked here. Is PVC preferred over ABS? The answer is no. PVC and ABS should be thought of as about equal in performance and expected life. PVC is probably the material that is most widely used but some local jurisdictions limit DWV piping to ABS only. Why you ask? ABS (Acylonitrile Butadiene styrene) pipe is only manufactured for DWV applications under the IPS (iron pipe standard) wall thickness sched. 40 in sizes ranging from 1-1/4" through 6" under ASTM(American Society of Testing & Materials) standard ASTM D-2661. By contrast, PVC pipe is manufactured for Electrical conduit, pressure piping, DWV piping and well casing and the wall thickness standards range IPS Sched, 20, 30, 40, 80, 120 and 200. In addition, PVC is also manufactured under the SDR Standard Dimension Ratio) wall thickness standard. Under the SDR standard the wall thickness can be mathematically determined by dividing the diameter by the index number. I.E. A 2" SDR-30 pipe would have a wall thickness equal to 2" / 30 = 0.066" PVC pipe intended to be sued as "pressure pipe" will be labeled as approved under ASTM D-1785 PVC pipe approved for use as DWV pipe will be labeled as approved under ASTM D-2665 PVC pipe approved for well casing will be labeled as approved under ASTM F-480 The plumbing codes state that all DWV piping inside a structure MUST BE sched.40 pipe. While they do make some PVC sched.40 pipe that is labeled solely for DWV application as a rule all other PVC sched 40 pipe is labeled as approved under ASTM D-1785 & ASTM D-2665. This explains why when installing PVC pipe we are required to install it in such a manner that the writing on the pipe wall is clearly visible for inspection and most inspectors will red tag any section of PVC where they cannot see the writing. In some jurisdictions, rather that rely on the inspectors to see all the pipe they simply demand that we use ABS pipe, which is only manufactured to DWV specs.

Well, we have not gotten ours yet and you have a very real grievance, for sure. I am trying to find the name and contact information that Trevor gave me to the guy that helped me locate repair people in my area, when I was having trouble with the exact same thing (finding local repair people before I bought the range...not a broken range). What zip code are you in, btw? If I find the guy's name and contact information, I will post it here. Eh, all I have is his name, Bob. If your plan is to keep koi in a 700 gallon pond you will need a huge pump capacity as they are dirty fish and you will have to have suberb filtraton and water turn-over. (You said you were a koi lover). I would buy no more than two butterfly type koi and make sure they are both males.

If you decide to only keep a few male goldfish and have lots of plants you might get away with a 500 gph pump but if it were me I'd go with a 1400 gph or greater. You can always divert extra flow but you cannot make it pump more. I happen to be a fan of extra filtration no matter the pond size.

What is your budget? Don't forget the filter, filter media, hoses and clamps in the equation.

Thanks Loma Ponder, Ccoombs1 and Comettose for the respond. To answer Commettose's question. I already have two 50 gallons filter set aside waiting for a pump to get everything to work. My budget for a pump should be nor more than $200. I'm also a fan of extra filtration also. : ) . What i'm really looking for is a pump that can really do the job meaning that it will keep my pond clean all year round. Reliability and Energy efficient is what i'm hoping to get too. Oh and by the way, what should the water turn-over rate be for this 700 gallons pond does anyone know?

It's not as simple as stating that your turn-over rate should be once an hour...or twice an hour. the problem is that your turnover rate needs to be appropriate for your filters. If your turnover rate does not allow the water to remain in the filter long enough, bioconversion of ammonia won't happen. So a fast turnover is not necessarly a good thing. But a slow turnover rate is bad too. As a general rule, a pond must be turned over at least once an hour. Smaller ponds need a higher turnover rate. We will need to know a lot more about your filters before we can establish an appropriate turn-over rate.

Also, as Comettose said, your pond is really very small for koi. Koi get bit....up to 36" long!! With your small pond, they won't even be able to turn around. Koi also produce a lot of waste. Most koi keepers suggest a stocking rate of at least 300 gallons per koi, with a minimum pond size of 1000 gallons. Many koi keepers use a stocking rate more like one koi per 500 gallons, or even one koi per 1000 gallons! Your pond is really better suited for goldfish. If you simply must have koi, stick with longfins. Longfins do not get as large as regular koi and seem to be a bit hardier. Still only get a couple though.
