Fuzzy Velvet Leaves

My aunt gave me a birthday card that had a paper leaf with seeds imbedded in it. I planted the leaf, and although many seeds sprouted, only two are still living. I think the trailing plant is some kind of alyssum, but what is the other one? It has elongated green leaves that have a slight saw-toothed edge, and they are covered with an exquisite velvety fuzz. No flowers yet. Toward the base of at least one stem there is a pink or red tone. Thanks

I'm not sure but Foxglove, Digitalis purpurea, comes to mind.

TriangleJohn: Thank you for your reply to my question. We have planted the "Becky" plants this spring. Some are doing well and some are suffering pretty badly from the hot weather. Odd, because all are planted near each other in an area where all have the same sun/shade/etc. Yet some are truly failing while others are doing much better. My opinion is that either they require more of a shaded area or that they may be too fragile for the heat we've had this year. The Shasta Daisey I was asking about is a hardier variety and thrives in this type of heat. Thanks Again, FauxDiva

I've looked at every Verbena species that occurs in Texas and can't find a match. Verbena bracteata has similar leaves, but only grows 20 inches and is prostrate in growth pattern. Try to get more photos when it's in bloom.

I'm not so sure, I'm afraid. My foxgloves always have much shorter stems and a rather different shape. There are, of course, different digitalis types.

I also don't think it's Digitalis purpurea, but as karin1 says there are other foxgloves. It certainly looks a bit like comfrey but I would describe comfrey leaves as rough rather than velvet. Was there any wording in the card which might hint at what the seeds were? Do you remember what shape/colour they were? BTW I don't think the droopy thing is Alyssum either. Maybe a slightly sunstarved trailing Lobelia?

Foxgloves and rudebeckias are common additions to seed mixes that fuzzy leaves.

It does look like kind of like verbascum chaixii before it sends up a flower stalk.

Thanks for everyone's input. I looked at pictures online of Verbascum and Rudbeckias, but the leaves on those plants look more pointed on the ends. The trailing plant has narrow leaves which curl under slightly. I've seen a few tiny white flowers on it, but the plant hates the sun and wilts in direct sunlight.

While your card could be of a different mix, I suspect that your plants are pretty common garden plants - that is what most of these mixes feature. And I think it is most likely one of the plants already suggested to you.

Conditions and the youngness of the plant could make the leaves not appear like mature plant leaves - which you will find mostly when you search for images of the plant. Keep watching. I'm sure it will eventually tell you what it is!
