Muscovyduckling, I did get a Souvenir de la Malmaison climber, and have great hope it'll be a beautiful rose. I got it bare root at the same time I got my bare root Austins, but it hasn't started blooming yet. If it does well, it should be the perfect color for the fountain trellis. Rosefolly, you're absolutely right. I'm judging a rose -- Crepuscule -- that I've never seen except in pictures. I'm excited to have it, and hope I fall head over heels once I see it blooming. Ingrid, you were the one who inspired me to get Duchesse de Brabant, and I'm so grateful. Will you be getting your new one now or in autumn? Mine is doing well so far, and I hope yours does too. Molineux, this little Duchesse has been blooming continuously since I received it, and the blooms are elegant deep cups -- just lovely. All the roses in this new garden are being trialed, and those that do best will get a permanent spot, with multiples of each of the few selected. Duchesse is certainly in the running, and your description of the shrub is a big help. Mendocino rose, I feel so fortunate to be engulfed in such incredible beauty. I would never even have known about many of these roses, except for the great help I got on this forum. Do you think Heritage will do well in a hot climate? I don't need the trellis to be smothered in roses. A simple tracery with a few roses would be quite lovely. Some people say heritage blows quickly; do you find that to be the case? People also say that about Claire Austin, but mine almost always has blooms, and they last long enough to keep me happy. Similar in height after years of growing out and training to that size, maybe. Belinda's Dream with a touch of mid-day shade is 4 1/2 to 5 feet tall with those long flower stems after 3 years in the ground. Duchesse de Brabant wants to be 6 x 8 or b x 8 x 4 if you have deer doing the pruning. Oh...but I wonder if ARE sells the same Duchesse we grow out here. I seem to recall seeing a rose with many more petals, and our Duchesse is a cupped job that is just semi-double to double.

I've been growing Duchesse de Brabant in the ground. I planted a Duchesse in spring of 2006. It survived its first winter. I transplanted it this past autumn. The root system was in very good condition when I transplanted it. It's too soon to tell how it will do over the long run, but I'm optimistic that it can be grown as a small bedding rose. Three hours of sun doesn't sound like enough. In a cold zone I'd think you'd want it to get lots of sun to keep it as healthy as possible. I found that it can get some blackspot late in the season.

It’s grown so much, and is blooming like gang busters! I had AT&T here all afternoon yesterday, installing my Direct TV. They sent over another man, who was “here to go over my plan” with me. He managed to talk me into switching my wireless phone over over. I was very hesitant, but he pretty much had me when he said the new IPhone XR had a way better camera and had 4 times the storage capacity as my current phone. I’m always filling my phone with rose and flower pictures. lol I also managed to get him to agree to set everything up on the new phone, and make sure I was comfortable with it before I agreed. As soon as I had it in my hands, I insisted on posting a picture to the forum to see if it worked properly. Caflowerluver, your ‘Duchesse de Brabant’ post was the first one I could find that I knew I had a recent, appropriate picture for, in my photo library. I quickly posted the picture, but didn’t have time to write much else, with him looking over my shoulder. She’s been a great bloomer for me, in spite of a powdery mildew problem. I would have planted her in some afternoon shade, had I known she’d appreciate it. Nevertheless, she’s lovely, and I wouldn’t be without her. Lisa
