Cardinal Vine growing in 4 days!

I found some Cardinal Vine seed my Mom gave me about 3 years ago. I planted it and they came up in only 4 days. Suprise suprise.

I am new this year to growing from seeds so this Forum will be very valuable. I started with Hosta seeds because I collect Hosta's, just to see what I could get. Then Rose of Sharon (lots), Cone Flower, Blanket Flower and various grasses plus what ever seeds I find around.

You have found a very exciting hobby or a-vocation.... welcome I would like to suggest you also check out the forums on hybridizing/breeding... With a interest in hosta & growing plants from seed the next logical step is to try to develope new varities...... Both activities will keep you interested for years.....

It's awfully early to be starting seeds in Iowa. The challenge will be keeping your Cardinal Vines alive inside for the next four or five months.

I hope you saved some of your Mom's seeds for a later planting.

I pray it's not voles that I have. I think i was mice because I found a little nest and the roots were exposed enough (I dug it up kinda sloppily) so that after eatting the rosette of foliage the mouse could suck up the roots like little tasty strands of spagetti. The garage can warm up on a decent winter day.... the furnace and water heater are in a side room that vents to the garage so that adds to the warmth. It probably stays in the 40's. Ok the fig tree I keep in there is starting to sprout now too. I wonder if I can put it somewhere colder.... I already put all the potted bulbs outside, I gave up on winter. Terrene: open up one of their tunnels, put peanut butter on a trap and cover it with a board or something... if you can catch a few dozen it might make a difference. (from someone who was shocked one spring to find a mature cherry tree dying because it's roots were completely girdled and stripped)

Thanks! I've heard of the purple hyacinth vine too, but is there any possibility of getting it NOT as seed? Or scarlet runners? Even something that will make it partway thru the summer would be better than nothing. I was thinking about tomatoes in a couple of big containers -- hoping to find some Celebrity -- but I hadn't thought of growing them up the wall. My main criteria for back there is "green," so getting some tomatoes (or ANY tomatoes) out of it would be a bonus. Will tomato vines live through the summer here, even if they aren't setting fruit? I'll check out okra, and sunflowers might be cool. You've got me thinking outside the box now. Heck, maybe I'll try some corn back there, or some other type of bean or pea. Direct sow and see what happens. Again, if it doesn't do "all that well" or gets fried or eaten or makes a bit of a mess back there I won't be heartbroken. I just want a bit of a screen that won't be a nightmare to get rid of later. One other option would be something viney that is quick and long-term but controllable -- if it would stay on the wall behind the roses and not try to eat them, that would be completely acceptable. I just don't want cat claw or something horrific like that.

lol Bob. Elizabeth roflmao that is funny and probably more fitting for these times. MJ thanks...that was a special moment and I did make one just now. My I would be out taking pictures ALL the time lol. This morning I thought how nice it would be if now a blue jay would show up and pose for a picture. A short while later low and behold there was one on the pecan tree. BUT:..I opened the door and the noise made him take off. Kristy it is a feeder. The squirls hang on it on top with their feet...head down and eat from it too lol I DO need to get a house for them. But the neighbor has a real big one. ......NO it is a SHE roflmao Sounds like it is hardy and will be ok. Oh your yard will be even prettier come spring....the gazebo will look very gorgeous! Lucy

Both of these are twiners so they need something to twine around, otherwise they'll twine around each other and the mass will fall over in a big clump. Some posts are just too wide for them to twine on. Just based on some of the twiners I have, it seems about a 1/2" (and possibly 1") diameter is about the widest they can use. And the cypress vines are just so thin and fragile-looking when they are young, that they probably need a little less to get started. If you can find some of that plastic mesh sold for vegetable vine climbers, you could wrap that around the pole and that will at least get them started and later vines will use the earlier ones as a support to climb. As an alternate, you could grow them long and then tie the longest vines to the post and let the others use the tied up vines as a support.

4 days sounds about right...they are pretty anxious seeds.
Also, go check out the winter sowing forum....feed your urge to sow in the middle of winter using their methods....

I had the same results with mine, but now I have a few questions. They bloomed almost immediately and I wasn't sure if I should let them bloom or not, but I did. And they had seedpods and all that. But now the growth seems stalled. Should I have not allowed them to bloom?

Anyone have any idea???
