pondless water feature question

Okay, so this might be a silly question but here goes.

I am building a small pondles water feature, basically a boulder with a hole drilled to pump up the water. I know I'll be placing it on a grate that is over the water supply tank (and then hiding the grate with rocks.) Everything I have every read has said that people dig a hole 2-3 feet deep and put the water tank in there.

What I wonder is, is there any reason it can't be partway above ground?

The water feature is going to be at the top of a dry creek bed and I'm going to be piling some boulders around there anyway so I could hide it with rocks. Just wondering if there is some reason I shouldn't do this?

Thanks.
