Sacramento Historic Rose Garden Open House

Hi - our next open garden is April 16th. We have less roses for sale this year, but we think that we have the best selection ever of found roses that you can't buy anywhere else. We've been planting more companion plants, pruning and weeding, and the garden looks great. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the weather will cooperate, and planning to have a wonderful time no matter what.

The Open Garden is on Sat, Apr 16, from 930 to 200. For the best selection of roses, come early and line up. Jeri is preparing yet another heartbreakingly beautiful catalog that will make you want to buy them all. Some roses will be sold in a Silent Auction. There will be tours of the rose garden and of the Hamilton Square perennial plant garden, and a history tour of the cemetery overall. You can buy shirts and aprons with our logos. It's always a wonderful day.

What: Open Garden

Where: Sacramento Historic Rose Garden, in the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery, 1000 Broadway (park across the street)

When: April 16, 930-200.

Who: Volunteers of the Sacramento City Cemetery

Why: Roses to buy. Roses to see. Friends old and new.

By the way, the cemetery is open five days a week, Fri-Tues, and will be converting to summer hours of 7-7 on April 1st. If any of you come to Sacramento at other times to see the rose garden, let me know and I will try to join you there. I simply love taking people through it - my reward for thousands of hours of volunteer labor.

Yes, Debbie, and we were hoping that you can help! Bill needs to send out the volunteer solicitation - I'll give him a little reminder. Anybody else who is coming who would like to help is most welcome to do so. The event has gotten bigger than our in-town volunteer base!

Bumping this down. We had 32 people and a beautiful day. Gosh, we need rain, but a sunny 70 degrees was delightful. There are a couple of GWers in this photo (not me, since I took the photo!), but a range of other folks, some new to helping out in our garden - some college kids, a high schooler and her mom, and others who heard about our garden and wanted to join the fun. We will continue pruning Tues and Sat mornings unless (we hope) we are rained out. We usually prune till Valentine's Day but roses are leafing out already, so it's a race to get it done. Anita

Aprons - denim shirts - tshirts - there are other ways to spend your money at Open Garden! We have some heirloom iris too. Of course, we would not turn down a donation either. We are doing some big-ticket items this year after building up a fund - new markers for the plots, a new Historic Rose Garden sign, a new structure - we are making some wonderful improvements. Very exciting. Rather expensive (and totally out of our non-profit funds)! Whether or not you can support us financially or with your time, we'd love to have you come and enjoy the roses. Anita

Actually, that white plant is a bridal wreath spirea. I grew up with them all around the base of our old brick Victorian house so it makes me happy to have them growing in our old cemetery. I hope it changes, but it is supposed to rain this Saturday in Sacramento and be in the 60s. :-/ Im still going and bringing my hubby and parents... but darn! Question for those who volunteer at the cemetery... my dad is in his late seventies and very active, but still has some limitations. He really misses his big garden (recently moved to a smaller place in Sacramento), but when I talked about volunteering there he was worried that it would be too structured and he may not be able to commit. There are volunteers that don't have to come every week at a certain time right? Some that can drop in when they're able? He is a fabulous retired hairdresser and we were teasing him that he could be like Edward Scissor Hands there. :-) I think it would be really enjoyable for him... but a big commitment might be too much for him. There's a place for volunteers like him, if he's up for it, right? Who would he talk to there? Anita would that be you?

This selection of roses is truly something special.
This Open Garden should be, too.

We really do have some special roses this year. We'll have a 'Lupe's Buttons,' one of Col. Mel Hulse's favorite seedlings from the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden. Kate, I hope that yours has worked out well.

I owe Jeri the "final" list of Silent Auction roses and an introductory article for the sales catalog. I'm hopeful that I can get my stuff to her by this weekend so that I don't hold her up. We try to get the catalog on-line by the beginning of April.

We have no idea what this recent rain will do to our bloom by April 16th. It looked like bloom would be early, and now I'm wondering if it will be late, and if we'll have enough bloom for my "Early Bloom" tour on Mar 26th. Being a gardener is very humbling. We are in nature's hands.

Thanks for the update. Regarding Lupe's Buttons that has turned into one of the true joys of the whole garden. We absolutely love it. It is planted in the front yard and I often catch my husband in the summer looking up from his book and on our front porch just enjoying the view of big, vigorous Lupe. I bought a baby LB from Rogue Valley Roses as well last year for the back yard. Wonderful rose that I hope more people will consider growing.
