looking 4 easy care - repeat or everbloomin roses

Am replacing perennials w/shrub roses or any easycare rose. Will use mostly red's & pinks - on the smaller side, mixed with walkers low / then need one good white one. Kinda like Henry hudson & Snow drift. Anyone know if these are decent? Pinks & reds I like Island Dancer, Hansa, Fiesta, The Wall, Hot Wonder, Meidiland Crimson, Heart & Soul, Hope 4 Humanity, Champlain, Flower carpet red & Pink. Will they survive in zone 4 A? two to three ft. compact shrubs would be best. I have a list of easily 50 bushes & have really confused myself. Would appreciate if anyone has any of these & finds them really good or even extra pretty. Thank you.

Hansa and Hope for Humanity will for sure be well over 3 ft. I see you have listed quite a few Easy Elegance roses. I've really been impressed with the ones I grow though I only have personal experience with one from your list - Fiesta. I haven't had any problems getting my EE roses to survive winter so far and all they get is a shovel or two of mulch over the crown before winter. They will die back quite a ways and rebound quickly come spring.

It looks like you've got a nice list started so far. Fiesta is a really pretty rose. I really love the striped flowers. I got an EE 2009 intro last year called Kashmir which is a medium to dark velvety red with hybrid tea shaped flowers. Very, very nice plant. And I highly recommend Macy's Pride which is a beautiful light yellow/cream color.

Do you know about helpmefind.com? Very helpful in gathering some of the info. you want about those roses.

Sorry I can't comment on the list you made. I either haven't grown them, or I have no idea how hardy they are in your zone.

Obviously, any of the Knock Out roses are easy care, but they won't look like "florist's roses," as Michael pointed out. In addition to red and pink, they come in white and a yellow (sorta--fades quickly to whiter look). The most disease-resistant hybrid tea I know is Elina--wonderfully lovely, well-shaped rose that is ivory white with pale yellow highlights. I liked mine so well that I went out and bought two more. Another hybrid tea which is disease-resistant to some degree is Valencia--kinda buff/golden shade with a touch of apricot at times. It doesn't rebloom as fast as some others, but it has the BIGGEST and most long-lasting blooms I know of. Valencia is also very fragrant. (I think Elina is--but can't quite remember.) I'm not sure you can get either one at a local garden center. For some reason, garden centers specialize in the disease-magnet roses. I got my Elina and Valencia online at Roses Unlimited (you have to order 3 minimum) and at Pickering Nursery. Good luck, Kate

I suppose you're getting fewer replies than expected because there's is a very recent thread below on 'Easiest Austins' for z7 VA which is not Georgia, but still quite hot and humid. I grew many Austins in central NC z7b, also hot and humid, so see if my and others' responses in that thread will be helpful to you. If not, let us know! Actually, we'd have to add the pinks to that list: Sharifa Asma (one of the best perfumes), Heritage, The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild, Lady of Megginch (deep cerise, does superbly here in England), and probably Spirit of Freedom (reputationwise, I just got that one), A Shropshire Lad and Abraham Darby if you're up for some big bushes. I second Jubilee Celebration, although it's a small plant that can look a tad fragile, good bloomer though. Don't overwater that one! Cheers, Andrea

You probably want to let the shoots bloom before doing anything. Yes, strong shoots can be cut back to 3', then hopefully each makes two or more lateral shoots, which in turn can be cut back to two or three leaves so they branch again. After a few years you have a bushy plant with enough top growth that it is satisfied and stops making excessively long canes. You can also bend long shoots over and peg them to the ground or tie them to the base of the plant in a hoop. Such canes will make two or three shoots at the top of the arch. Later you can prune off the outside of the arch if you want an upright bush. If more strong basals come in the fall, I would not prune them down until spring. 6' shoots are not uncommon on vigorous shrub roses, and the plant is capable of longer ones if it does this in the first season. Sounds like it will need around 5' of width and can fill more than that.

I have about a 20'X3" flowerbed on the east side of my house that I planted with red roses in February and am also trying to find companion plants after removing mint (although I notice here and there it's coming back, probably won't EVER be able to get it all out, but am trying!). I easily rooted a skullcap this winter and planted it to see how that would work out,, but it looks like it's struggling, so am looking for some sort of companion plants, too. I do notice that a purple salvia does well in this bed, it gets morning sun and afternoon shade, so may go with that and be done with it.. The roses are Firefighter, Oklahoma, Francis Debreuil and Stephen's Big Purple (yikes!), along with a Souv Dr. Jamain that hasn't done anything for two years, and the wonderful Dr Huey that sprung up out of nowhere (and I can't get rid of). I'll be interested to see if this works. Must say at this point I am enjoying the wild colors, so we'll see...This is pretty much my first foray into the more modern roses, and so far they look healthy.

Snow Drift was very healthy last year, with just a little bit of black spot late in the season. I died down to the ground last winter, so not as hardy as some of the others. I got it as a band in 2007 so it's pretty small yet.
Hot Wonder was a disappointment last year. It got black spot pretty bad, though in 2007 it was much healthier. It is fairly hardy though as it only died back to snow line. It regrows well and puts on a good show. Some think the color is a little harsh, but I like it.
Great Wall was another disapointment as it had black spot on par with Hot Wonder. Last year was my first year with it so it wasn't very big yet. I'm will giving mine another year, if it doesn't improve I'll shovel prune it.
Champlain is very healthy only getting a little powdery mildew late in the season. It is also hardy to the snow line and is usually one of the first to bloom.
Two others that are not on your list that I recommend are My Hero and Chuckles. Both are very healthy and both are hardy to the snow line with good regrowth and lots of flowers.

As for cultural practices, I don't spray my roses and I put something down around the base of them in late fall for winter protection.

Thanks 4 the tips. Have eliminated a few others am checking the zone ratings. I appreciate the help. Won't even bother if a rose tends toward black spot.
