Hello...happy ending here. I was looking through my seed box and discovered some Green Ruffles Basil left over. :-) Still will need to find a source before next year because I was not able to grow it to seed in my own garden last year.

Alia - I too am a poppy lover. I had both Springtime and Maiden's Blush but moved this past summer and even though I transplanted them, don't think they made it (moved in June) Am hoping they just went dormant and will pop out this spring. They are both a very pale pink and white. Juliane is another pale pink poppy with no blotches. Jung's had Springtime listed in their fall catalog and I ordered it but never received it - got a card saying "crop failure." Am hoping it will be listed this fall. I have not found another source for either of them.

Prairiemoon...if only they didn't have a $100 minimum order. I did see it at vareigated plant nursery's site. That is where I'll likely end up getting it from (though a local source would be preferred so I would know what I'm getting....which means I'll probably check out the local nurseries before ordering it....gives me an excuse to check out the 2 new nurseries I have just found within an hour or so this spring)

AnnieG13, have you checked out the meconopsis poppies? Be warned you'll be stricken with plant-lust.

Here's a source listing for Farfugium japonica'Argentea', (a/k/a Ligularia tussilaginea'Argentea').
Be advised that this is a very unstable cultivar and all new growth may be solid green. I have grown a couple of them for about 20 years and after an initial few years, have had to remove new green growth each year, as a consequence, it never becomes any larger.

Don't believe you will have a problem with 'Brazen Hussy', but in a moist environment, R. ficaria can & does become invasive! I grow it in a rock garden, confined to a small area with large rocks and with sharp drainage, so that it remains rather dry. Have seen it cover an acre in a fortnight in a Norteastern state, where the soil remained constantly damp! :Rb

razorback 33--I doubt R. ficaria 'Brazen Hussy' will get too rampant here: I planted Macleaya cordata in a particularly barren spot in dark shade, and it's been quite mannerly for over 5 years now. I have variegated Aegopodium podagraria (Bishop's Weed/ Ground Elder) in another part of the garden, and although it's spread happily through a third of the garden, it's a troublesome third where little else would grow and it has not gone beyond that area in over 10 years. Even with supplemental watering, very few invasive spreaders really get out of control here.

I bought a dictamnus alba from a mail order nursery about 20 years ago when I first started gardening. It didn't survive and I've since learned that they are tricky to transplant-- better to sow the seed in the place you want to grow them. Problem is they grow so slowly from seed, you have to be very patient.

I finally rec'd s few seeds in a trade a year ago and had a few little plants at the end of the season. I'm waiting to see if they live through the winter.

Alia, or any one else who has successfully transplanted a gas plant--I'd be grateful for tips.

Hudson's seeds and Select seeds both offer Rubrus, I understand the white variation Albus is more finicky, harder to grow.

leelf1- do you mean Artemisia ABROTANUM? There is no plant species called Artemisia arborescens! (http://www.wormwoodsociety.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=381&Itemid=85)

That might be why you cant find it...

rian- i dont think the white is more tender, because the straight species is white, and the pinkish purple is the variety! They do like alkaline soils, and i was successful with pot transplants... till i tried to divide the established clump. Instead of 2 plants from one i got none...

Another plant i cant find is the sweet pea 'senator'... i know seedsavers carried it once but they seem to have dropped it!

I'm sad to report only about a 50% success rate planting Dictamnus. Now, I just make nice, big hole, *very* carefully ease the critter out of it's pot, gently set it in, fill, water, and tiptoe away with fingers crossed ;). Too much water after planting almost always rots them. Oriental poppies seem simple to do compared to these guys...but you can't light them on fire!

A shrub type plant (perennial) that my Grandmother grew in her garden when I was a child. It had cascading limbs (lots of them)covered in very tiny pure white flowers. My siblings and I used to sit and play under it all the time. I thought Bridal Wreath Spirea was it (mainly because of the name,has white flowers too) so I ordered a few two years ago, but they're not the same thing. It could be another type of Spirea, but I have never seen anything that resembles it.

I have moved dictamnus here quite successfully. My theory is that you can move anything as long as the plant doesn't notice...So a huge hole to extrude it and a huge hole to plant it. Some years it simply dies though for reasons unknown. I am VERY fond of both colours.

The plant I searched for longest and hardest was Clematis Mary Rose. I put a down payment of $10 down for this variety from a special nursery owner. After over 10 years, he never found it. Well I now have 2 of them from different sources. :) AT LAST!

I don't think so, Gardenbug, the flowers are different. The flowers on this bush were little single white flowers shaped like tiny roses or poenies, they weren't in clusters.
I like that Buddleia alternifolia, though. I'm sorry you lost yours. I hope you find another one. Thank you so much for your suggestion...Marylee

Gbug...I find it challenging to grow anything vertically for some reason. I am sure I have just as many opportunities in my garden as anyone else has, I just find it intimidating and a struggle to construct, have constructed, any kind of proper aparatus to grow upward on. I'd wager that it probably is much easier than I think and that the obstacle is in my mind, more than anything else. [g]

I looked up your Clematis 'Mary Rose' and the photos are quite captivating. A plant I might push a little more to try to find a place for. Tell me, why have you looked for it for so long? Just the look of it, or does it have some other quality that you are excited about?

Astilbe...that spirea prunifolia is very pretty with the double blossoms. I can just imagine how much fun that is, to grow a plant from your childhood. :-)

Not that I've really searched for it, but Melianthus major is never offered locally. It was mentioned on another post (something like 'just for the foliage') and it's one of those plants that, when you see it, you want to grow it. Since I'm trying to restrain myself from buying more large, potentially ungainly perennials, and since I can never remember the name of this plant, I haven't looked for a source on line (yet!). If I spotted one at one of the local nurseries I frequent, though, I'm sure I'd have to bring it home.

I looked for several years for Ilex pedunculosa, and it was so expensive at the one mail order place I found it that I never ordered it; then that nursery went out of business and I started kicking myself. One day I spotted a half dozen of them in the clearance section of a local nursery, and got them nearly for free. The end of the story, though, is that I'm not sure I really like this plant, despite its great berries and lack of spines; it may be one of those plants that is 'rare for a reason'.

Marylee, your very welcome! Im pleased I could help you. Honestly, if you had not mentioned that the flowers were rose shaped (double) I would have never been able to guess what plant you were talking about. ItÂs a great bomb-proof heirloom.

On seeding dictamnus-I just let the seeds fall around the mother plant. then in the spring look for baby plants. I always get at least one. I don't try to move them until 2 years old and then very carefully.

Does anyone know where I can find these red-twig dogwoods? I've been looking for them forever.

Pineapple sage. I really wanted that last year for the hummingbirds. I sat in my office one day and called every nursery in my county, in the close by metropolitan areas of Reno, Paradise and Chico to absolutely no avail! My husband thought I had finally detached from reality.

Needless to say the hunt continues this year. I might break down and order it online instead and save myself the aggravation.

For me, it's dwarf aruncus (Aruncus aethusifolius). If I had known when I picked one up years ago that I would never again find this plant in the local nurseries, I would've bought out their stock. As it is, I now have that one lonely little goatsbeard out in the garden totally outshining the nearby astilbe.

I'm with katefisher in that I might have to break down and order more online... but there's a part of me that thinks I must just be looking in the wrong places, and I continue to search locally.

I'd like to find the Gas Plant too. Such a lovely old-fashioned plant.

But ones species I can't find anywhere is lovely native bulb - Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica). It's even hard to find in the native plant catalogs.

An outstanding native bulb which seeds readily to form carpets of soft pink about 4 inches tall in April. Another plus, it doesn't choke out everything like the scilla's do when they decay - the spring beauty has delicate foliage which justs melts away quickly when it's finished blooming.

Halenia elliptica - I'd love to grow it, but have never found anyone selling seeds.

Bottle blue gentian. (Gentiana andrewsii) The kind that doesn't open. I saw some blooming on a garden tour last fall; gorgeous!

Kate - Be sure to look in the herb section for Pineapple Sage instead of with the flowers. You may find it there, not blooming yet, so it's hard to spot but usually inexpensive.

There are certain plants that are "common" and I'm just sure every year that I'm going to find them locally so I don't order them, then by the middle of summer, I realize I sure have just ordered from a catalog. You'd think I'd learn after four or five years of looking for Lonicera sempervirens (coral honeysuckle) that I'm not going to find it. It's been on my wish list for a long time.

I have planted at least 5 Gas plants and have grown them indoors from seed as well. I still have never gotten one to grow to any appreciable size. They are stunning in bloom but slow to get established and 'take off'. Hence the reason I still have no Gas Plants with flowers. I have one that was still going as of the end of last season and I'm hoping it will make it long enough to get established for this year.

sigh....Dianthus Chomley Farran - also known as Dianthus Inferno...can't find the seed or the plant in Canada. There are a few mail order nurseries in the US that have it but they don't ship to Canada...boo hoo!

If anyone has any ideas of how I can get my hands on this please let me know!

I have the Dianthus you are looking for and I just want to suggest that once you get it you should take cuttings. It is easy to do and then you will always have the plant, and will be able to give some away to your friends.

I have been able to keep one plant growing for a while now, but have lost others
for some mysterious reason. Now I always have cuttings going.

Neillia Sinensis. I had this shrub at my old house and have always regretted leaving it behind. When I bought it at a specialty nursery I asked the mature, quintessential British gardener looking saleslady what it was and she leaned her head down a little, peered/glared over her glasses at me, and said, "it's a very choice shrub." I almost felt guilty for buying it as I was a gardening newbie and wasn't sure I was worthy of such a 'choice' plant but I did and it was indeed very pretty. I'm very sad that I have never been able to find another one as I would plant one in my new garden if I could.
